What is non-L?

This may seem like a newbie question but I always see non-L posted in threads regarding macro lenses. Can somebody tell me what that means?

The L series is Canon's top of the line lenses. It's not just in macros but in every category of lenses. It stands for 'luxury', so it doesn't stand for a feature, like IS is 'image stabilization'. They are pretty awesome lenses, but you will pay for it though.

In a nutshell, better glass. They are usually brighter lenses and have a better construction being more resistant to a light rain and/or dust.

Especially refering to Canon macro lenses, there is an L version of the 100mm and a non L version.

The L version costs $900, the non L costs $450.

The $900 lens is a much nicer lens, it has image stabilization and is weather proof, plus more elements to help reduce things like chromatic aberration, flare and other annoying things that happen when you take pictures :)
