what is that large substrate ARC uses

are they some kind of calcium reactor pellets?

(It's been awhile since I've been there. Last time I was there I noticed some large substrate. Things might be different now!)

Sure someone will chime in but just guessing that it is the 50lb carib sea stuff. I like to guess and gamble.

I was just in ARC about an hour ago. Their acan selection is sick!

Caribsea Media = ARM. There are different media grades, the one that I use is the ''extra coarse''. Not exactly economical, but it works well! :) HTH

I know that there are a lot of things in this hobby/addiction, that can be done several different ways. Many things that were once golden rule but have since been changed by technology, but I have always read and heard that anything larger than crushed coral for substrate is basically a nitrate factory. Is this still the case and would this product be exactly that?

I have always gone with the regular out of the box live sand. I wouldn't mind a larger, more coarse substrate in a larger tank, mainly because of fish who like to kick up sand.

I didn't mean for this thread to turn into a discussion on substrates. All I wanted to know is what type ARC (and ABC) are running.

IMO "out of the box livesand" is a ripoff and coarser substrates are usually avoided in display aquariums.

That being said, even TRS has a display featuring coarse substrate. No large fishes in it, either.
