What is the deal?

What are we looking for,and how do we confirm and treat?

"Once you know what to look for ,how to confirm it ,and how to treat, it's not a big deal anymore."

What about lower S.G?

Didn't seem to help at the levels I tried (low teens.)

How effective is UV to keep this down?

Don't know. But I was told that they can lay eggs anywhere, even on the fish. So if that's true a UV unit would not be very helpful.

It'll look like that but really small. The largest I've seen where only about two to three mm . You probably will never see them on the fish with the exception of it being on the eye and then it's still hard to see though the eye will look cloudy. A FW dip will reveal their presence. You'll see little off white looking ovals floating around the dip water. I've noticed that the seem to come off by the ten minute mark. Symptoms I've noticed are reddened areas, ulcerated areas, cloudy eyes,frayed/ragged fins, blotchy skin coloration, lethargy, labored respiration, and scratching. These are when the fish have a fairly heavy infestation and it may only show some of them. You may not see or notice anything with a light load. The effects noticed are due to they way the trematode attaches itself and can cause entry sights for secondary infections. The cloudy eye can be the actual trematode your are seeing . Prolonged exposure can cause the fish to loose a eye and eventually result in death if nothing is done.I've used Aquarium Products Fluke tabs,Seachem Paragaurd, and Hikari Prazipro with success but I like the Hikari product the best.

I wouldn't be too hard on any place with them. It would be easy for a fish to pass through with this problem and go undetected.

Da_n dave,

The fish was showing all of those signs but I thought it was ich because he did have a few spots.

I can't believe we didn't catch this. The thing that gets me though is how the fish was having problems then I treated with the copper power. Around 4 days later the fish is doing great and continued that way until BAM!!!! Here comes the reaper.

I need more cow bell.

This may not be a popular statement with some folks here on RC but this is why I dont quarantine anymore and haven't for years. The water parameters on my main tank are spot on so I make sure the fish I buy are healthy and in they go. I haven't lost a fish to disease or had an outbreak for a very long time.

I am curious as to your quarantine tank setup. The ones I see being used with success are set up like a regular system. I've never been a fan of copper in any form, why did you add it? Was the fish showing signs of disease? Sorry to hear about your fish.

I did the same until I put three anthias in my tank and lost two + a flame and my other fish were starting to look bad. Now they are all in QT.

I will always QT a fish from now on.

Why did you like the Hakari Product the best???

Why did you like the Hakari Product the best???

From what I understand the medication that is effective against eradicating the parasites can be a little cumbersome to mix as it can't be directly added to the tank,

The hikari medication has already done this for you,

Iรƒฦ’ร‚ยขรƒยข"ลกร‚ยฌรƒยข"ลพร‚ยขm going to add this to a FW dip then transferring them to quarantine, I know the FW dip will work but I wanted to add a little something extra cb

I have had issues with a couple of Tangs. An Ancanthurus Japonicus, who went through ich and Hypo and came down with strange blotches and tiny 'skin tag' looking spots. I thought I had him cured and moved him to my main along with a Hippo from another qt. within a week both of the Tangs had these specks and were scratching. Other fish are fine. From what I read, many Flukes are 'Host specific' in the wild. I guess they really liked my Tangs. I moved them again, treated with Prazipro which cleared it up but 2 days after I removed the medicine, the Japonicus looked near death! Specks and blotches, heavy breathing lethargic.. I treated for a secondary infection with furan-2 , that cleared up the splotches but the specks still remained and he still was not doing well. I started 1 of three Formalin dips that next day and that help a lot! He is up and swimming around again, looking great. Both fish are due for the third dip tonight. I have kept the sg at 1.010 and I change 30-40% of the water daily, siphoning the bottom. I worry though about the reproduction cycle. Depending on the type of Fluke it is..some reproduce on the fish, yet their eggs are unaffected by treatment. Others fall to the bottom to reproduce. I may treat again with Prazipro, just to be safe.
These are a real pain, ich is MUCH easier to deal with!!;)

Can Prazipro be used as preventative to incoming fish? Will it harm the biofilter and require large water changes?

Anyone? Is Prazipro reef-safe?
