What is the deal?

Didn't seem to help at the levels I tried (low teens.)

Don't know. But I was told that they can lay eggs anywhere, even on the fish. So if that's true a UV unit would not be very helpful.

It'll look like that but really small. The largest I've seen where only about two to three mm . You probably will never see them on the fish with the exception of it being on the eye and then it's still hard to see though the eye will look cloudy. A FW dip will reveal their presence. You'll see little off white looking ovals floating around the dip water. I've noticed that the seem to come off by the ten minute mark. Symptoms I've noticed are reddened areas, ulcerated areas, cloudy eyes,frayed/ragged fins, blotchy skin coloration, lethargy, labored respiration, and scratching. These are when the fish have a fairly heavy infestation and it may only show some of them. You may not see or notice anything with a light load. The effects noticed are due to they way the trematode attaches itself and can cause entry sights for secondary infections. The cloudy eye can be the actual trematode your are seeing . Prolonged exposure can cause the fish to loose a eye and eventually result in death if nothing is done.I've used Aquarium Products Fluke tabs,Seachem Paragaurd, and Hikari Prazipro with success but I like the Hikari product the best.

I wouldn't be too hard on any place with them. It would be easy for a fish to pass through with this problem and go undetected.

Can the fish really be able to take the fresh water dip for 10 minutes? The reason I ask is that the last time my purple tang had ich I put the tank in FW with same PH and temp but it died at about the 8 minute mark.

btw--PraziPro is great for treating flukes. I'd to treat in the main tank and the only thing that didn't made it was cup coral. I have yel gorg, polyp rocks, shrooms and all inverts alive after treatment.

That sounds like what mine Majestic Angel, Blue Hippo had along with cloudy eyes before I treated with PraziPro.

i will freshwater dip everything coming in from christmas islands and marshalls. Even a lot of Hawaiian stuff (including flames) i am going to freshwater dip.

goldflake angels are ALL coming in with flukes. I have no idea why. I have talked to numerous wholesalers here and they all notice it.

i did not QT my flame wrasses for this specific reason. I added them directly to the main tank and my male and very lage females are at almost a 1 year mark. Which is a lot longer then many many people are having now adays with them.

i will also be getting prazipro and adding it to the food as well.

can prazi pro be added to the water directly?? It is a 1400 gallon holding system so i will probably need a lot... lol

Yes, you can add it directly. According to the instruction for treatment and preventive use the dosage is the same: 1 fluid oz per 120 gal. They come in 16oz and that should be more than enough. It was an emergency and I could wait for it to ship so pick it up from the lfs and it $45 for the bottle.

The credit goes to ariel47 for getting me to use Prazipro.

I've only used Prazipro in the water, never to the food. They do make them in large quantities as it is used quite a bit for ponds.

Fish with flukes do seem to make those weird jerking motions.

flameangel88: I FW dip for 2 minutes and the flukes drop off. Also FW dips do not work for ich, only velvet.

LargeAngels: Thanks for the tip. FW dip never done me any good in the mid-80's but on the other side SW dip for FW fish have worked many times.
