What is this orange barnicle lookign stuff thats killing my candy cane?

OK this candy cane was doing ok for about 3 weeks in my tank, then the polyp flesh started receding along with the polyps starting to turn brown. ABout the same time this orange stuff (which at not so close a look I thought was coraline algae) started growing on the stalk. (it grew from nothing to what is pictured in 3 days. On closer look it looks like little bumps with mouthes or holes in them, like little barnicles or something .. but its encrusting like coraline.

WHat is this?

oh man, that stuff looks disgusting, I have no idea what it could be, hoping someone else can chime in and that I can learn.

Looks like an encrusting SPS. But what do I know lol!

I'm gueessing some kind of parasitic, encrusting sponge myself. I'd frag the unaffected polyps away(if any) to save them.
