I got this guy on a spur of the moment thing while I was helping load the saltwater tanks.

I have no idea what it is other then some kind of sea hare

How do I keep him alive and healthy? it looks like he has filter feeders on his back.

Bornella calcarata I think

Yeah thats the one, only information I can find on it is they're toxic and if they die your tank is history.

Any truth to this?

I really don't want to get rid of it, maybe I can put up a little unheated tank for him

All nudibranchs are feeders on one thing and one thing only. When that food substance runs out, the nudibranch dies.

Yes, it's a Bornella species for sure. Bornella stellifer feeds on hydroids, yours probably does as well.

Cheers,

Don

Curious, where did you get this? Cool looking, but prospects probably aren't too good for it unless you have its preferred food growing in the tank.

I would have to know what it feeds on, I really want to keep it alive because it's just so epic. It's in a 3.4g pico with a 3.4g refugium. What ever it needs I will provide.

edit: ok you told me hydroids, I once set up a fishless 10g saltwater tank in hopes that the "polyps" would turn into jelly fish. From that experience I know that they are rather rare although present in most live rock. Can I supplement it's diet? I don't mind if it eats soft coral, I only have one soft coral in my tank and it can be moved.

For many years I have been friends with a lfs owner, he used to have me work for him and recently he had me drive to the airport to pick up a SW shipment. While restocking I set things aside I thought I might want (he pays cash or store credit, I chose credit to soften the blow on his wallet..... and I love an excuse to put money into my tanks)

apparently this thing was a one off special his supplier sent to him at a drastically reduced price. I decided to get it and put all of my remaining fish credit towards it, I thought it was worth way more then he paid. Didn't know what it was but my friend insisted it was some sort of zerg lol. We were mesmerized by it swimming around in the bag and I couldn't leave the store without it.

I really need to know what else to feed this guy, if he dies in my tank toxic or not I'll have a huge problem. I could move him to my 29g if needed

It probably wouldn't have bombed your pico, but its chances of survival are likely better in the larger tank. Good luck in any case!
