what is this

I have this purple/red slime that is covering my sand. it isn't on my rocks or my glass. it is the strangest thing I have ever saw

most of the time I do. I needed water last week and had to use my tap water. how do I clear it up??is it bad?

appearently you used to much tap water
cyano is a pain to get rid of....it goes crazy and spreads like mad

ok well how do I get rid of it? can I use that slime away. it kills all alge? sorry it is my fault. but between work, wedding and my sons school I have been not being a responsible fish keeper.

Hi Amy,

Try using small size tubing and siphon out the slime when you do your water change. You can also use a new toothbrush attached to the tubing with a rubber band so you can scrub and siphion at the same time. Just top off with RO/DI water instead of tap and you should start to see things improve. I wouldn't use any additives to get rid of it...I would stick to just doing water changes. Inbetween water changes you can also blow it off the substrate (with a turkey baster/sea squirt/or your hands) and let it filter/skim out of the tank.

Things should improve after a few water changes with RO/DI water.

to get rid of it....
LOTS of water changes with RO/DI water, and lots of flow. You can also siphon it out with a hose. IMO it's crazy to have a reef tank and not your own RO/DI. Cyano almost had me quit this hobby cause it gets so unsightly.

I do have an RO?Di but I don't keep it running all the time. i forgott to turn it on. I did a mass water change last week and siphon most of it out. as long as it doesn't hurt anyone

amy feed less for now also test phos. any levels must be reduced with a sponge or water changes with phos. free water. after a few weeks with strict zero nutrient levels it will burn out. dont panic. 1-feed less
2-test phos.
3-any levels must be removed immediatly and indefinently.
4- nitrates must be zero'ed also.
if you make sure all of this is done continuosly for a week or two youll see less growth and the following weeks will result in it burning out.
u can try red slime removers but without adding above practise it will only be a temp fix.

lastly if this tank is in early life(first year) it is normal to have these blooms while the good bacteria grows and eventually out populates and consumes more levels than nusaise algea.thus outfeeding it (consuming nutrients)and killing it.
feed less keep up the top off ,only with phos free water and things will clear up. no worries. all other advaice is good but not attacking the root of issue. can be successful but not for sure. stripping levels is for sure fix because algea cant grow with no levels.

if you keep doing water changes it can contribute to issue as it adds more nutrient rich water. if your ammonia and 'trates are zero'ed dont do water changes just starve it off with less feeding and lack of adding more new water that is rich in nutrients like phos. just top off as long as trates dont rise this will strip nutrients with time.

if doing water changes with nutrient free water like ro then it will help . but tap will add to issue.

Step 1: add Red Sea Red Slime Remover ( basicly phosphate free kanocyn) * eddies has it.

Step 2: wait 4 days with reduced light cycle on your tank.

Step 3: Do big water change with RODI and siphon out the slime. add a bag of PHOSGUARD from SEACHEM to your sump.

Step 4 watch your phosphate levels, and then re-increase your light time slowly over 2 weeks 1 hour longer each day.

Step 5: smile :D

* ps: I had some slime pop up reciently also... it happens to all us.

Personally, I find it comes and goes. Never used slime removers and doubt I would. I remember when phosphate removers were the rage a couple years back and people used so much that it caused major issues with their tanks.
When real bad, cut back on feeding, remove as much as possible manually (turn off pumps while doing this), and stick to normal water changes. I don't sweat it too much- it will clear as long as you identified the source- and it sounds like you did. I also find it to be a natural part of the "new tank cycle/syndrome"

about 6 months ago I had a bad red slime outbreak, I used the "red slime remover" from eddies and it worked for me, I used two treatments with it, worked well and it never came back...

I must say though, it says to use a certain amount for the gallon volume, so you have to take in to account the loss of volume due to live rock etc.. You dont want to overdose....

ok now ill start the fire storm :D
when my cyano was at it's worst I used 2 tablets of Maracyn. It cleared up in less than 24 hrs. Never came back.....

red slime comes and goes I don't believe it has anything to do with tap or ro di water. It will usually starve itself out . I think the manual method is best. the red slime remover does work if you do decide to try it be sure to follow the directions very closely..

A clean up crew of scarlet hermits and the right snails and some conchs will help get rid of some of the slime, wee all have it one time or the other, more so the other........dont get too fustrated it will cycle out eventually.....

peace
