Incoming TDs between 2000-3000. What is your tap water TDS at?

My brother has always thought the water where he lived in Salinas, CA was pretty bad tuns out he was right. Even after installing a BRS 75 GPD RODI everytime he added water to his tank he would have an algae bloom presumably because the water was high in PO4 and NO3 I was never able to actually test it myself I didnt have time. The filtered water tasted way better than the tap water did at least :strange: But because the water still could be used for his Salt Water tank he asked me for help. He won a Typhon 5 Stage RODI unit at the CHICO Frag Swap :celeb1: so I helped him do a serious Frankenstien upgrade to his RODI.

Stage 1 Sediment Filter

Stage 2 5 micron acid washed* Gem coconut carbon block filter, removing 98-99% of chlorine

Stage 3 1 micron acid washed* Gem coconut carbon block filter, that removes the remaining chemicals and chlorine

Stage 4 0.2 Micron Zetasorb filter will be installed soon http://www.marinedepot.com/SpectraPure_Zeta_Zorb_0.2_Micron_Absolute_Rate_Sediment_Cartridge_RO_DI_Sediment_Filter_Cartridges-SpectraPure-SP2111-FIRORPSD-vi.html

Stage 5 Trying out a new Air Water and Ice product a Phosphate filter http://theh2oguru.com/filters/individual-filters/phosphate-filter.html

Stage 6 75 GPD RO unit with wate water plumbed into a second 75 GPD RO Unit

Stage 7 and 8 are currently the same color changing DI Resin

There is an Auto Shut Off valve plumbed in as well as a "T" off the RO line for drinking water. There is also a T off the DI line one goes to a spigot the other to a 55 Gallon drum for salt water mixing. Additionally installed a Triple inline TDS. The Permeate pump was removed because the city water pressure was so high it did not work correctly.

WOW, that some seriously high TDS  Where do they get their water from?

I borrowed Anthony's TDS meter about two weeks ago (will be returned this Friday to Anthony ;) thanks ) and my reading is 49 before any filtration and reads 0 out of the RO membrane before the DI resin.

As far as I know it is Ground water from the Salinas valley probably loaded with pesticides and fertilizer prior to going to the Water treatment plant. At this point I am not sure if they treat it or just add more crap to it.

See the above bold statement. My money is on that ;)

There are probably waste water treatment plants that do better with treating their stuff. :(

Its great to hear at least the incoming TDS is on average pretty low around Sacramento. Even though there has been a lot of other issues with the water. I am curious what the Ground water up the hill is like and Woodland area.

At Hannahs old apt in Davis the incoming tap water TDS was 500-700

Tap Water TDS at our current Apt is 275-350 and I was happy with the LOL

I am at 47-49. Is it considered drinking water? If so, 500 is the safe limit for drinking water, I would certainly force the water company to fix the issue. I contact my water company any time there's a tiny issue and they are on site checking/flushing/testing within 24 hours.

I'm curious have you calibrated your TDS meter ?
If not I would that's just a crazy high number

The TDS meter was brand new and calibrated. It was tested on multiple other water sources prior to being hooked up and testing my brothers water.

There water has also previously been tested by other TDS meters and has always head extremely high. However it was normally in the 700-900 range.

Yes, this is considered Drinking water it is the tap water for the city of Salinas, here in California. Also my tap water in Davis used to be up to 500 at my current apt it is 275-350. Yes this tap water is considered drinking water as. Well neither are private wells both are supplied by the city. Yes, it is probably worth filing a complaint about.

Also where do you live? Not all water companies repond that fast.

I am in NY, but my understanding is that 500 safety limit is per US Food Administration which should be followed by all states.
