I got this anemone as a gift from someone and it's been in my reef tank for as little as 6 months and it's been doing very well, just really curious to know it's name ๐Ÿ˜€

An unhappy one. Can we get FTS. Condylactas (spelling? ) maybe or a really small and undercolored BTA? Anyone else?

The pictures we taken right after it ate, I'll try to take some better ones when I get home

I've never had a BTA attach to the sand. They always find a way onto rock.

My vote is condy as well. And would also agree that he looks unhappy.

It is one of the non clown fish hosting anemones. There got to be many hundred species, if not more, of non clown fish hosting anemones.

I know that it isn't a clownfish hosting anemone, just trying to figure out the name for this anemone

It is on its last leg. Another apparently new tank that is not ready for this type of life. It's such a shame with all the information available in these forums that folks continue to ignore sound advice to be patient and wait until the reef is more mature. Unnecessary.

I didn't want to be the one to say it... but you can tell from the condition of the sand bed that the tank is either not mature, or poorly cleaned.

Both terrible for anemones. And pretty much everything else

Lol or did you not want to say it since you have a nem in your brand new tank too? Pot meet kettle ;)

Agreed doesn't look happy though. OP what's some stats on your tank, lighting, parameters etc?

Parameters are important. What's more important is to slow down let the cycle finish and MATURE A BIT. Then and only then should you need adding animals of that type. There are hunters of these posts. All ask the same. What is this and why is it not doing well. NEW TANK. Not a month, not 3 months 7 or 8 in your experience for Inverts and most corals. Not every time but 99% of it.

Be adding and hundreds of these posts. Stupid AC. Should proof before sending though I admit.

So he did say it's been in the tank 6 months. Not sure if that was caught, but you're going at him as if it's a brand new tank and nem. Sands got some algae and cyano maybe, but so does my year old tank.

Also, just realized how tiny it is. It makes the snail shell look huge. And it does look much better in the last picture.

My tank water, anemone, and livestock has been cycled and stable for over a year.

I only recently moved everything, water included to a new tank, roughly 15ft from the old one.

So no, we are not in the same boat.

I will however admit, that I made many many costly mistakes during the first 2 or 3 months. But lesson learned.

Still no deaths other than carpet surfers.

But he didn't give details on his tank. He said he's had the nem 6 months. But people judged how old his tank was based a picture of his sand then trashed him for it. And so I point out the fallacy in that. Guy posts pic of a nem he's happy with, wondering the name, and is greeted by people saying it's dying and knocking him for adding it to a new tank. Great welcome to RC he got.

We are in the hobby of preserving the longevity of a multitude of species.

Without our dedication, and hard work, when the oceans are dead in 20 years, we will be the only ones holding the keys to the future.

That being said, some people take this hobby to that place, every time.

So when someone posts a very generic question, that could easily be answered via a Google search and 3 keywords, people may get frustrated once in a while.

I was involved in a huge argument about garlic. And don't even get me started on the convo regarding seahorses.

So needless to say, even if the info received is harsh. Take it with a grain of salt (pun intended). We all want the best for you, and most important, your livestock, that's what we really care about.

Lot of uneducated and pretentious people post here FISHstar- dont let it get you down. I have seen plenty of those anemones, or their ilk throughout the years. The sometimes were called curlyque anemones in the trade-but that common name has been used for many other species as well-including some near aptasia. WHile they can become pests, they generally are more like rock anemones in their splitting-and dont usually over run like aptasia. Most of the ones I have seen have been nickle to quarter size-but have seen similar ones larger.

now is it happy? The last photo it looks fine- the first three less so- but that could have been from eating as you say. It doesnt look bleached, although they do fine in non reef tanks with normal lighting. I have also seen these animals go through cycle on fresh live rock curing- as well as taking them down to a SG of 1.009 before they showed signs of distress-so they are very forgiving animals. Not flashy- but just as fascinating as any other invert.

So back to what is it- look up the curlyque, the rocks and carribian anemones and you may locate it.

Major point-you folks are basically telling this guy to wait a year before he will be able to keep aptasia.

second- clownfish anemones have very different requirements than the majority of anemones. This is as plain as the nose on your face with pest anemones-yet it seems to escape people. Its easy to understand sps has different parameters than mushrooms, but this fact is lost on anemones. They have so many different habitats that there is no falling back on "best practices" advice.

And of course with the photos-it could be almost anything. Thats why IMO is so important.

I agree with syrinx on what he has said.

Imo it looks like aptasia. I am not sure if the op is familiar with what that is however so I recommend looking that up. It is a form of anemone that is very disliked by a lot of hobbyists who consider it a pest. The issue is how difficult it can be to remove once established and the fact that they can sting other corals and then kill them. It's honestly up to you on if you enjoy it though and that's what matters on if you want to keep it.

Honestly though I could be wrong on what I think so take it with a grain of salt :p

Some people really like the aptasia also. I knew of a person that had a tank full of it on purpose.
