What kind of clam is this?

Hi all, I've had this clam ever since it was tiny about 2 inches. It's been many years now and I don't recall what type of clam it was.

Can someone please help ID it?

Thanks in advance!

Thanks so much. I felt bad I didn't know what it was and I've had it for so long lol

Looks a lot like a Vietnamese squamosa like I used to have...dashed pattern on the mantle.

Yep, please do check out the shell. That's a beauty you have there, no matter what species (or hybrid) it turns out to be, and a huge one, to boot!:eek1:

Here's a little more identification help:
Hippopus hippopus 15.75 " - 17.72 " (40cm - 45cm)
Hippopus porcellanus up to 15.74 (40 cm) http://www.sealifebase.fisheries.ubc.ca/summary/Hippopus-porcellanus.html
Tridacna costata up to 15.74 (40 cm) (extremely endangered)
Tridacna crocea 7.87 " - 9.84 " (20cm - 25cm)
Tridacna derasa 15.75 " - 23.62 " (40cm - 60cm)
Tridacna gigas 39.37 " - 51.18 " (100cm - 130cm)
Tridacna maxima up to 11.8" (30 cm)
Tridacna mbalavuana up to 19.68" (up to 50 cm) (Syn: Tridacna tevoroa)
Tridacna noae up to 11.8" (30 cm)
Tridacna squamosa 13.78 " - 15.75 " (35cm - 40cm)

A pretty light version of identifying clams from CITES. Some of the photographs I'd question if they were accurate portrayals, but it is what it is. The information on the shell scutes may be helpful to determine the dominant species if it's a hybrid.

Here's a shot of my old Viet Squamosa when it started out

and another shot a few years later next to a tear drop maxima - the Foxface was full grown, about 8" at the time.

Take a few more pictures and post them, though - I'd never get tired of looking at a nice specimen like that!

Cheers,
Ray

Thanks so much Ray! I'm going read up on the links tonight. I'll try to take better pictures but it's so hard to get the shell pictures because the mantle covers most of it. I'll shut off the pumps and try to snap a good top down pic.

if you cant inspect the shell, try taking and posting a pic more from the top, showing the complete mantle.

to be honest, most of us clam fanatics can tell species just by mantle patterns.

That. Is. A. Beaut! (And a beast...!)
Congrats on having raised one heck of a showpiece - whatever you've been doing, keep it up.
Could you get a pic or two with only daylight/white lighting by any chance? I'm curious as to the background color of the mantle.
And you've a couple pics there that would make a great poster or somesuch, too.
Thanks!

Cheers,
Ray

Thank you for the kind words. I tried to snap some pics today with the kessil turned to white but it's still bluish when I take a picture.

Yep. That last photo is a great shot, too! Really shows off its colors and pattern well. Nice!
