I took these pictures at local public aquarium, I'm curious to find out what kind of fish they are -

This little guy seems have a camoflague to blend in with kelps. But I couldn't find any kelpfish that looks like him:

I don't know what the first fish is off the top of my head - Second fish isn't a hawkfish, its a painted greenling. The butterflyfish is problematic for me - at first I thought it was a C. sedentarius, just with some extra dusky coloration due to being a captive fish. It could however be a C. dolosus - but that would be a lot rarer. The damsel is definately showing artifacts from being captive - but I'd say it is a Dascyllus marginatus.

#3 Looks like a Reef Butterfly (Chaetodon sedentarius). Supposedly despite the name, the are not reef safe. Apparently, they have a mouth designed for scraping rocks. There isn't too much information on these guys that I could find. I was considering one, but decided against it. My LFS gets them in from time to time and they're usually between 1/2" - 1" in size.

Thanks. Painted Greenling - no wonder I couldn't find any hawkfish that looks like it! the way it sits on the bottm of the tank looked so much like the longnose Hawkfish. C. sedentarius and Dascyllus marginatus are both right on the money - I just looked up fishbase with those names.

now it leaves the first one - it was about 4 inches, housed in the same tank as the Painted Greenling, so probably a temperate fish too.

O.K., I cheated and did some searching - the first fish is probably Blepsias cirrhosus or a closely related species - a type of sculpin.

For the butterflyfish - what other species was it in with? Most public aquariums have regional exhibits - so you can usually figure out what ocean the fish came from if you know its tankmates. For example, if the damsel and the butterflyfish were in the same tank - then you probably saw a C. dolosus. If the butterflyfish was in with say, a french angle, then it would probably be a C. sedentarius.....

its definitely not like any Dolosus i've ever seen, they are pretty much like a darker Millaris IMO and the body spots are absent from this fish. Not really sure there have ever been more than a dozen or so ever imported.

The body shape does look like Blepsias cirrhosus, but it doesn't have white spots. I've looked up all the species in Blepsias, none of the other looks like it.

(btw, the BFF is in a tank by itself)
