What kind of Snail is this ?

Can anyone tell me what kind of snail this is ?

It could be a nassarius or a predatory welk. If it digs in to the sand bed it's most likely a nassarius and a beneficial part of the clean up crew. If not then most likely some kind of welk which will hunt down and "drill holes" in the other snail population and have them for dinner. They are in the same family so can look similar.

Don't be so stunned. You have two foot pictures, and a photo showing a side view of part of the shell. There are very few snails that can be identified by looking at the bottom of the foot (like, none) and a person would have to be really familiar with your snail to recognize it from a partial side view. All that said, it looks like a muricid, which should eat other snails and clams.

Think of it looking like a margarita snail ONLY different.
 
mrdss, if you want a better, more positive ID, pull it out of the tank, take a few good photos and then put it back.
