What makes a good Saltwater Fish Store?

I'm just curious, whats like something that you guys look for in a good saltwater fish store?

Whats something that pops out at you?

Is it like the good prices or what?

A huge display tank?



The reason I ask is because I go to many of the fish stores many of you guys recommend that are "great", and sometimes I'm impressed and sometimes I am just like why would someone recommend this place. What do you look for in a LFS?

in order:

good customer and knowledgable service.

good and flexible prices.

clean and well put together.

without those, you could have 3-4 big display tanks but i still won't go there.

The store could look like a rathole for all I care as long as the above mentioned things are in place.......

Ever been to Carson Tropical on Norwalk/Carson in Hawaiian Gardens? You'd think it was a dump, until you talk to Tom (the owner) & realize that he really knows whats going on & has great prices................................example......Sunset monti cap frags for $50.......Quoted me $455 for a 180 Center Overflow w/ (2) 1.5" drains............everyone else wanted at least $550..............

dont care about displays put that money into your frag tanks. I would like to see quality corals and fair prices.

and i'd add good customer services too. There are two ways to make money in a business -

Make an one time sale with good profit
Make repeat businesses with fair profit

You got to remember some times stores go thru a dry spell ,and dont have much corals. This happens to all stores. I've been to Tongs sometimes and dont see anything worthwhile, othertimes they have alot of rare corals...Cool.
As foor the fish, all stores have fish dying on them. Its part of the selling fish biz. Some stores are just better at maitaining they tanks clean and removing the dead fish. The fish all come from the same suppliers......

idealistic but not realistic. we hate to admit it but prices will always be the first draw. for example, atlantic tropical is the worst LFS every by all accounts. many won't admit to it but many here that have condemned the store have stopped by and continue to stop by to find a "steal". this is how cr@ppy shops stay in business.

good selection at bottom line prices goes hand in hand. pointless to have good prices and have nothing but damsels and brown shrooms to sell. healthy livestock and lastly employee knowledge. yes, i say employee knowledge is last. let's not confuse employee knowledge to good customer relations. most of us don't care if the LFS owner/ employee knows his stuff. it is likely that we already know or at least have some clue of what we are buying.

again this is my personal HONEST opinion.

1. price - i don't care how nice or knowledgeable you are about that acan sitting right there but if you're going to charge me $30 a polyp then the whole store's principles just come crashing down.

2. customer service - please don't tell me that i can keep maximas under 18 watts of light

those are the 2 main reasons for me. a display tank tells me how profitable the store is. whether its by price gouging or good customer retention is pretty easy to see. cleanliness tells me about their personalities. hardcore reefers i know don't give a crap about how clean the stores are, heck the fish stores in the Philippines was a hellhole for any girl i brought there

I think its hard to have fair prices sometimes if you want to make a living on a LFS. Alot of competition. So you need to pronounce yourself as an individual seperate yourself from the rest, have people remember you. Wether its a firm handshake when you greet them, or a free frag with someones purchase. People never forget those things. Its all about the hospitality.
