What pump would you recommend?

I'm setting up an internal closed loop for my 75G, and can't decide if I need a MAG-7 or MAG-9 for best results. The pump will be behind the rockwork, 3/4" plumbing under the sand to the two front corners, and exiting out of two 45* 3/4" elbows.

I was planning on finding a MAG-7 for it, but was told it may not be enough flow, and to go with a MAG-9. I've alsi heard that the 9 would be too much for a 75 gallon tank. So I'm going to put my trust in you guys, which would you prefer? Right now, this is the last big decision I have to make before I get into the auto top-off and kalkwasser... Thanks in advance.

If I went with an Eheim, would you recommend the 1262, 900GPH? It's going to come down to availability and affordability, but I'm looking for as much info on them as possible.

I did something similar when I first setup my 180. I had a 1000 gph pump exiting through three 3/4 inch pieces of pipe. The flow out of it wasn't that impressive.

I ended up going with a couple of maxijets with a sureflo mod that allowed each to push 1500gph and used a fraction of the electricity. I eventually ended up with Vortechs.

What are you going to do if the pump needs to be cleaned, will you be able to access it without taking apart your rocks?

As of right now, that's the only way I could see hiding the pump, and yeah, I'd have to remove some rock to get to it. It would have a union under the pump to make removal a little easier.

It makes it more difficult when the tank's not drilled for a closed loop from the sump to the tank. That would be the ultimate way to do it, but with everything already set up, and trying to add flow without have powerheads crowding the tank, this was the only solution I could come up with so far.

Oh, and Ray, I wanted to see if, in a couple months probably, I'd be able to stop back up and get some more frags off of you for the 75. I had my eye on that slimer last time I was up there, and by the time I'm ready for them, I may be interested in a few more things as well...

i had a mag 12 on a closed loop. i put a piece of carpeting down to help with the noise. i took it down after a few months because i didn't need alot of flow at the time. i never set it up again because i did the same thing as ray and put 2 mjs with the sure flow mod to help save on energy cost. i will now got the with powerheads over a closed loop.
if you do go with the mag 9 it won't be to much flow for you tank either way good luck

Sure, no problem.

Another issue I had with that setup is I lost 3 fish as they got sucked onto the intake grate of the pump as I was pulling 1000ghp through a pretty small opening.

also check out melvsreef i used his way for my closed loop it was behind the tank on the stand

That's a good idea, thanks for the link. When you set yours up, did you use a SCWD on it? That's something I'll definitely be checking into. Also, with this method, I could plumb my intake into my overflow box, thus hiding it from sight. So the only thing I would have in the display would be two returns in the rear corners of the tank...

Obviously I could direct the current with those returns, but wouldn't I need something else to add more current from the front, or sides of the tank? Also, I'm wondering, even if I went with a MAG-9, would this give me enough flow, or should I go with one of the aforementioned pumps instead?

It is were me, I would get some Tunze Streams. Non-controllable ones are not that expensive, are far more energy efficient than the Supreme pumps, and move more water.

Thanks for the input. Are you talking in addition to the melevsreef idea, or in place of? Also, are you still interested in that anemone? I haven't heard back from you through PM's... Thanks

On my 72g, I made a setup similiar to but better looking than melev's concept.

I didn't use the SCWD - but did T the return/ I have one intake from my tank and two returns. I used penductors on my two returns. I have it hooked up to a Eheim 1262 - which is extremely quiet - much quieter than my Mag pumps and I am getting excellent flow / circulation

What I used off the end of my two returns was:

flow accelerator

and I used one of these slip overflow strainers on the intake pipe

slip overflow strainer

Very clean look in the tank - hardly notice them, and great flow

I agree with Steve Pro, I would just get tunzes or evenn get vortechs. Once you get a vortech you will be glad you did, trust me...

In our 120 towards the back we run 1 vortech mp40w, mag 950 inside the tank for more flow, Mag 1200 return, and a couple modded maxi jets.

That 950 will be too much flow for a 75 unless you run barebottom because the side it points to will blow your sand around. Unless you split it but then you will get less pressure.

I agree! I LOVE mine. I have one on my 75 I just set up 2 months ago.

I guess it's an issue of price though. Although bigger, and maybe less efficient, Koralia's are a heck of a lot cheaper and accomplish the same overall goal. They do stick out more in the tank though, and that seems to be an issue here.

Yeah, the biggest issue that I have is I want the tank to have good flow, but not have powerheads cluttering it up... I can handle having returns high in the rear corners, but I think having the Koralia in my 30 gallon has effectively turned me away from wanting to put a powerhead in the 75.

It's already got water, sand and rock in it, along with a gold headed sleeper goby. It's an Oceanic tank, which has the corner overflow, but it wasn't drilled for bulkheads.
