Looks like a color morph of a Indo-Pac. Regal. These seem to show up in various morphs. Given that these are a unique Genus I don't think that can hybridize with other Angels but I may be wrong on that.
The reason why they go overseas is because they are more inclined to pay a premium for unique fish like these. The "albino" regals never make it to the US.

I love hybrids and morphs!!!!!

Those fish are all awesome in my book, that Regal is so insane...tell me how to get one. :)

Did anyone see Brian and Richard last night on The Discovery Channel catching this guy at 300-400 feet?

That was part of Gerry Allen's presentation at MACNA, and its also on a German website that some recorded at MACNA.
If it was on DC once, it will be on again. What time was it on?

Yes I did see this on DC. It's a shame they didn't show all of new species they foundin more detail. I DVR'd it. I can't wait to watch it again without my kids enterupting me. It was funny when Brian & Richard were fighting over who was going to catch the new find first.

So its finally been described? I was just going to post on this Forum about it.
The angel is a new Centropyge? LOL. Scott Micheals is going to have to update Volume 3 of Reef Fishes now! ( not to mention volume 4 if he'd ever release THAT one.)
Centropyge abei? Any info available? Pretty fish.

But how about that electric blue damsel ( looked like a Chromis sp. to me..) as well..

Matthew

What happened to my reply???
Oh well. So the new angel we saw collected on the show last night is named Centropyge abei ( or is that a differant fish altogether?)?
Looks like Michaels needs to update Vol. 3 of Reef fishes! LOL

Matthew

Oops. Sorry Large Angels, didn't see you respond right after me, disregard second reply everyone..

Actually, 2 goofs ( I'm clumsy today). I didn't mean described, I meant it has a formal latin name. Funny, when I saw it first time on the show, I thought it was in the same Genus as Flagfins & Bandits. Considering the depth, and all..

Matthew

Cool. Any info available anywhere ( esp. online? Links please!)
What about the other fish? I loved that Prognathodes Butterfly? The damsel, which is what all the Expedtion members went Ga Ga over, what about him?

Matthew
That is one unusual color scheme for a Centropyge, makes you wonder how many more are out there on the deeper reefs & drop offs?

You guys shoulda seen the footage that Gerald Allen presented at the MACNA banquet. It was bust-a-gut funny. Its the same footage from that series but the version we saw was not appropriate for Discovery channel viewing. Imagine George Carlin speaking like donald duck, chasing after abeis and some weird butterfly and chromis.

The Discovery Channel will be repeating the broadcast on 10/27 from 7pm to 9pm and 11pm to 1am (10/28).
Expedition Pacific Abyss (if that is the correct program)

It figures they edited out some of the language. All the fish guys were competing against each other, it must have gotten pretty salty ( pun intented) at times. I wish I could see the origional footage, must be hilarious. It was pretty funny as it was with the Heliox doing its thing..

John.
That be the one. I'll try to get a recored version this time..

Matthew

the waikiki aquarium has it now in one of their displays. pretty little fish at about 2". Looks really good, and decompressed well which is a surprise coming from 300 feet!!
