ive just set up a 210 gallon tank with a 65 gallon sump with a large refugium in it. i was wondering if you could suggest a return pump for this system. it has dual overflows and measures 72"x24"x29"

thanks in advance

I've got a 210 also and in my opinion a mag 9 is WAY to small. I've got a 75 gal sump and both overflows go to the sump and refugium and get returned with a Iwaki 55, about 1100 GPH. I've also got a closed loop running with a sequence hammerhead (5800GPH) but it returnes through a 20 outlet 3 section manifold. So with all the elbows and such I've got about 6000GPH flow and it's not to much as some may think. Do yourself a favor and go bigger than you think you'll need and you can always cut it back.

i would go with the mag 12.. i running the mag 18 on my 280. You want to shoot for 3-5x turnover through your sump.

You can also turn it down as well like sammie said and you also gotta take into consideration head loss the pump is going to have.

Eheim 1262, much higher quality pump than a mag that will run cooler, quieter, and last longer. Their output tends to be underrated unlike the mag pumps which are overrated. It will be a bit more expensive, not alot, but it will be worth it in the long run. These pumps have the reputation to last for more than a decade. They also can be run external to further reduce heat more reliably than a mag pump. Mag pumps were really never intended to be external pumps, but some people have had luck running them that way.

I use the E-heim 1262 on my 215 and I am very happy with it. It produces a lot less heat than a similar-sized mag-drive and it is quieter too - but more expensive. :)

A 1262 will outflow a Mag9 while using smaller plumbing, less power, less noise, less heat. You need big 1.5" plumbing to get good flow from a Mag9.5.

Yeah, that is what the specs say. It isn't accurate. Its is confusing. Ask anyone who has actually used both. Mag overrates their pumps, Eheim underrates theirs. Same with a mag7 and Eheim 1260. The 1260 smokes the Mag7 in practice.

BTW, that 800 GPH "rating" on the Mag is with 1.5" plumbing.
