i have a 180gal tank and a 60 gallon sump... the return goes out 3 holes drilled in the bottom... what is a good QUIET return pump(sumbmersible) for a mixed reef?

seems like not enough flow?
I am starting up a 180 and everyone has been recommending a mag 18 to me.. you think this would be too much for a 180 AGA with dual overflows??? its almost twice the flow of the one you recommended the OP

i have a mag 24 on there now and its extremely loud!... i bought a new imeller and its still really loud so im looking for somthing quieter..... but i agree with the whole gph thing..... i would think 900gph to 3 1.5" bulkheads with the headloss due to plumbing that it would be nowhere near enough.... maybe im wrong....???

I use a Eheim 1262 on my 210g tank/75g sump. It's very quiet and works great.

+1 on the 1262... The mags use so much electricity, its ridiculous.

Too bad you can't run an external pump - so many good choices there...like a Blueline 40-HD-X or similar...

red dragons are very expensive when you can get a similar pump from ATB for at least 1/3rd the price.

The best subemrsible I have used is the Tunze submersible. similar flow as the 1260 and quieter IMO. I would think the aquabee pumps would be a good return pump but noone seems to be importing them.

Something to keep in mind also when looking at submersible pumps is that energy consumption is a direct reflection to heat transfer....more watts=more heat

I just got rid of my external and I will never go back. I switched to the ATB flowstar 1500 and I am extremely impressed.

get the flow from vortechs or something, i have an eheim 1260 for my 215 A.G.A. tank, and you really dont need too much flow through the sump, and for my flow i use MP40w's

and also will i have noise/air bubble issues with the overflow?

doubt it, the 1260 shouldnt push out that much to cause it

I am so torn..
so far I have seen the following recommended
Eheim 1260
Mag 12
Mag18
external .....

haha, this is confusing!

haha thats what im thinking.... which 1??

Eheim 1260 or 1262....the 1262 pushes about 900gph which is plenty for through the sump. A few nice Tunze's will do the trick in the tank itself...good luck I am on the same route for a new 225g I am about to set up in a month or so.

ill start a build thread once its a little more far along... the tank is on the stand and the sump is chambered and everything is plumbed and leak tested... i even put an attachment to hook upp a hose to use for waterchanges(drains out of tube outside through hose)(pumped back in using a powerhead)... ill explain more when i post pictures... i plan on adding a frag tank and rdsb, so ill deffinatly need some help once i get there... for now i need to get a quieter return pump, and figure out my canopy game... i have a 72" mh fixture (3x150watt mh 12k reeflux, and 4 96 watt pc)... im a little worried about the light spread over the tank because its a current fixture with hqi bulbs and the reflectors arent that great so light height is gonna be something im gonna hafta play with... i just want this thing up and running already!!!! i've had it for about 2 months and it has yet to even have sand in it yet.... btw what is a cheap good way to fill the tank?..... any input or suggestions are appreciated
