What return pump?

REEF NERD
I got a 72bow used setup and it came with a Iwaki(wmd 30rlxt). that is 1140 at zero and 960 at 4 feet..Im thinking thats a bit much.I was thinking about maybe a mag 7 at 4 feet its 480 or a mag 9 that is 800 at 4 feet..I like insump pumps because of no leaks..what do you all think. im up for ideas

how big is your drain? if 1" I like the hyper flow pumps they are set up for sump use and are smaller and more effecient than Mag HF12 should do it

personally i hate mags, too much heat. for that set up an eheim or oceanrunner would be my choice. Both are great pumps and will run cooler than the mag.

not a big fan of mag pumps, too hot and loud. I've been very satisfied with my ocean runner 3500.

Eheim or oceanrunner. Have heard oceanrunner are just as nice as the eheim. I will let you know tomorrow once I set mine up.

i would rather run 480 gph through a sump on a 72 gallon tank than 800. try look into the new maxijet utility pumps.

im getting rid of the Iwaki.. but now you all have opened a bunch of diff pumps to think about . a lot of the reefers around here swear by a mag. are the oceanrunner, eheim a well bulit pump. is it going to last at lest 3 years

Mag7 does not do 480 GPH @ 4' despite that the flow charts may show. The Eheims are far more reliable, a heck of a lot quieter, and flow more in actual real world use. They are on the pricey side. The ORs are less expensive, are low power use, quiet, but dont have the reliability of an Eheim. Either are better than a mag.

I run and love ehiems - an ehiem 1262 external runs this setup total 160 gallons - as long as you have water movers in the tank - I have 2 tunze 6000s

IMO the Eheim 1260 is ideal for your tank. It's rated around 635 gph.

If you decide to go higher (~900 gph) in the future, replace the pump cover and you'll have the Eheim 1262.

i guess, also, i thought a picture was worth a thousand words - I am still happy and surprised that I have never needed for sump flow than one pump rated a 900 or so with twistys and 2 tanks - cuts it

also, they are very quiet, run cool, simple, nothing to rust, and mine has been running for 4 years straight

cool thanks .......jnb i think you were just trying to find a way to show off your tank.. lol

I have a 75 Gallon Reef Ready and I use a QuietOne 3000 that provides a rated 600 gallons/hour at 4 feet.

It uses only 40 watts compared to the 65 of the Eheim and it's half the price....

So far so good...

There is a difference between rated and actual flow. A Mag7 is rated higher than a 1260 but in practice flows far less. Never tried a QO myself to compare. Too many complaints of restart problems, noise, and failures with QO pumps for me. Hope yours works out well for you!
