What should the SG be for Hypo?

Read the salinity rather than the Specific Gravity and go for 14ppt. You can go all the way down to 11ppt, but if the fish seems to be stressed then raise it to 13 or 14ppt. 11ppt is OK, I just prefer a little margin for error. Measure with an accurate refractometer not a plastic swing arm type hydrometer. I assume that you know the difference between specific gravity and salinity.

Terry,
Unfortunately I do not have a refractometer :( I have one of those floating hydrometer/thermometer type. I wont be able to get a refractometer till next week. I have everything set up for hypo and plan on the transfer tomorrow. Should I stick with SG of 1.009 to be safe for now?

Thanks again for your help;)

I got mine from Dr. Foster & Smith just do a google search. It was $42 and I think it's on sale now for less! You can't beat that price and it works great.

You could start lowering the salinity, but you can't really be accurate without a refractrometer.

Problem with the swing arm hydrometers is that they can be, and often are, off by as much as 4 or 5 ppt. Not enough to be critical when maintaining a tank at normal or slightly lower than normal salinity, however, it's enough to be a critical difference at the needed salinity for effective hypo treatment.
