What size tank for a naso and a vlamingii?

I wouldn't want anything less than 10ft for a full size Vlamingii. Some will say 8ft, but those things get large and can move fast.

I'm talking about having them both together in the same tank.My tank is 10 feet long but I also have a blueface, annularis and an orange spotted rabbitfish.I have an 6 inch vlamingii tang now.I have someone that offered to give me about a foot long naso.I told them I dont know cause I dont know if I will have enough room for that many big fish. After reading many threads I'm wondering is my 430 even big enough for the vlamingii.I do plan on upgrading to a tank so big I would have to put on scuba gear to clean it.Well thats the plan but who knows when that will happen.

I think you'll be fine with your tank psilentchild. I have a pair of vlamingii's that are pretty dang big in my 130" tank and they seem very happy. I know of another that has been in an 8 foot tank for many years and seems happy.

Jason, I hope people don't read the 130 and think gallons and not inches

My two Vlamingiis have been in my 180 for about three years. They have gotten way to big for the tank. They will be going into my 10'*4'*3', and still some people think that may be too small for adult Vlamingiis!

Generally I think the naso tangs are more laid back. I would expect some mild posturing but that would be about the extent of it, I would think.

you have room for both ps, you have a big tank dude and your stocking is still very light IMO. Just get whichever is most appealing to you.

I don't think that length alone is the best criteria to base a vlamingi decision on. They aren't nearly as active as other tangs...they are just HUGE. In my mind, if a tank is only 1.5 feet or 2 feet wide...I don't see how it matters how long the tank is if the fish has to turn around within it's own body length.

To say nothing of the fact that a tank is also likely to be half filled with rock.

Just look at your tank and objectively ask yourself... "What is a 2 foot fish going to look like in here?"....because that is what you will have within 2 years.

I agree large fish don't belong in tanks that have 2' width and that are packed with rock.
I keep a fairly large Naso and an 11" angel fish in a 275 (8'x 30"x24"). I prefer the peninsula style aqua scape when keeping the larger fish because they have room to swim on both sides of the rock work and they use every inch of it. I would say an 8' tank is good with the proper aquascape. I would also recommend keeping the peninsula low enough so the fish can swim over the top of them.

There's a big vlamingi (still not adult yet) in the display of a lfs that's roughly 700g 10x3x3. I personally think its cramped and needs a bigger tank, and he still has some growing to do. I think a 10ft tank will be better then 99% of the tanks these fish end up in, and if your planning on upgrading, all the better. Also an orange shoulder tang will get almost as big as the naso tangs. I think you still have plenty of room left in your tank, its 10ft long plus its an L so you have additional length.

My tank is 30 inches wide and most of my LR is in the middle of my tank.According to LA the orange shoulder gets to be a foot and the naso 18 inches.

I don't think a vlamingii would ever reach 2 feet in home aquaria, if it did it would take years and years. The biggest one I know of is at a LFS in a 8'x3' tank and has been there for 10+ years basically by itself and a bamboo shark and is at most 16"-17" long. I guess everyone has different opinions of "cramped". I guess technically a damsel would be cramped in a box too when it comes down to it. Vlamingii's are one of my favorite fish, they are like big dogs in the water. Mine will let me pet them when feeding time comes. They do not belong in a 6' or smaller for sure. I think minimum tank size is 8 long x 24 wide though.
