OK, I'm going to revive my old thread here.
There is some great info in here... any other opinions or updates from those of us running large systems?

I use MRC with no doubt my systems are 500 gal plus

So the bio load is huge

This Model is my fave for 1000 gal systems

I clean once a week and phosphate precipitation occurs just beautifully

Wow! Now that's a skimmer!

Two is better than one

Two is better than one

I have one of each kind from two separate brands. They alert me if one is not working and they fill in the slack, each skimmer is rated for about 75% of my volume.
I want the MRC Orca Pro III for my next build in conjunction with a nice Becket rated for about 1000gal. I will let you know when I find the one.

I saw someone mention that all of the public aquariums have Becket and downdraft. Most public aquariums are on tight budgets and furthermore most of the larger (+1000) displays are fish only. Reef Central's TOTM's are smoke'n most public builds!!! So lets see some more of those BIG BAD simmers.

Grate thread...

whats your opinion on both?
someone once said the becketts are brute force while the needlewheel picks up slack and polishes the water. what is your opinion as you are doing the same thing?

I have an Alpha 300 Cone skimmer on my tank. Its one of the best skimmers I have ever owned. Prior to this, I had a Barr Aquatics SK5020 Beckett skimmer which was a beast as well. I like the efficiency of the Alpha over the Barr though.

I added an Aqua Driver self cleaning head and a custom home made wash down to mine which has been a great asset. My controller turns the wiper on once a day for 15 seconds. The I have only cleaned my skimmer once in the last year as the neck is always clean and scum free. only reason I even bothered to clean is was because I felt the pumps could use a good cleaning.
