What stores need stoney corals?

I have a bunch of frags that are not frag-sized anymore because it is taking me so long to find a new home for them. Does anyone know of a store that is looking for stony corals or some large stony corals or softies? I am only looking for store credit.

I figured that getting store credit at a local store will give them more business and they can make some money off the corals i trade in. This would help them out and help me out. I thought about selling them at a frag meeting but a lot of people are doing that already! I tried contacting Reef Culture, since they are new, through e-mail but i don't think they check there e-mail too often lol

Well because of work I am unable to attend :(

Also, as i mentioned before, I thought that it may be an opportunity for a store that's in need of corals to make some money off of them.

Well that's an interesting viewpoint. Like gamestop for corals... Except what you trade in gets bigger and prettier haha. Interesting concept. But anyway, maybe top of the reef? or something. Make sure it's a place owned by good guys. There's alot of buttheads out there.

I would try frag first. You wont get much for your stuff at LFS's. AT buys but at 1/3 what they will sell it for and thats in store credit. Cash out the door is 20%.
Good luck. I would try a for sale thread at min then sell the left overs at the LFS.IMO
Good luck

I am not really looking to make money off these corals, I would rather just get enough store credit for something i want or need and let the store make money off of them. Besides, if everyone sells corals amongst them selves then the stores have less customers and opportunities :)

Give Aquarium Arts a call, they take some things in for store credit... 480-820-8668

I read about the issues between clubs and retailers in my July issue of Aquarium Fish International and agree with some of the points they made.

Well if the stores tried harder... :P It's a hobby for reason, and hobbies usually have a place like hobby lobby. Yet we have fish stores that pop up and disappear, and sell everyone sick fish and dying corals. A good LFS is hard to find and then a good LFS with good prices? You better be good at telling funny jokes cause if anyone says that. :P

One thing the article addressed was that

"Members almost give away their frags. Stuff that goes for $50 in a store will be sold for $10 within the club. How can we convince retailers that we are not trying to put them out of business?"

"Are members telling retailers about the great deal they got on a coral or fish at a meeting? We had a member who did that, and we heard about it he next day form the retailer and lost that retailer as a sponsor. Make sure members know that retailers won't want to hear about great deals made at the society and that bragging about it may result in the society losing a sponsor."

These are quotes taken directly from the article "Secrets to Society Success" on page 62 of the july 2010 issue of Aquarium Fish International.

It made me think about how stores cant compete with a lot of our trading an auctions. Since we are all selling for cheep or swapping (which i am not against) the retailers don't have our business, which may result in high prices for corals or fish to compensate.

I just thought that since i see so many thread for selling corals and fish for cheep, here on RC and at the frag meetings and auctions, that i would give a retailer a chance to make some money off my corals rather then sell them like everyone else on here.

I am not opposed to trading and selling on here, I think its great! Especially when it ends up helping another reefer out! I just thought it would be good to give retailers "a piece of the cheep coral pie" too per-say. I hope that my reasoning is clear enough.

Yes, and I agree with the magazine's point. I've often though about that. There have been times where I buy things on here from people that I've wanted, then I see that coral at the store and think...hey, I just got that...which means I don't need it from the store. I do see the forum as competing with the stores, even if though that's not the intention.

Perhaps you could do a bit of both though?

Quote 1 Comment: We give them away because it promotes less reef harvesting that *some* LFS promote just for profit.

Quote 2 Comment: That's just snobbish business, I talk to my LFS owner guy all the time about what I get, he thinks it's awesome. A good business man understands that there's always a customer out there if you have a good sales model. Not clam up once he hears rumors about sales elsewhere. Think Radioshack does that when we sell a stereo to someone?

Now yes with the world revolving around us giving back to the stores we buy corals from, then LFS would be more beneficial in the fight to reduce reef harvesting, but it's easier to broaden the hobby locally and amongst ourselves, since who knows who can trust anyone when it comes to a retail location. Half of them are pushing products that they may not even believe in. Not that they are all dirty but some LFS just shouldn't be LFS. The right kind is run by a hobbyist. Heck if Erick owned an LFS I think we'd all be there all the time. He's the right kind of guy for that thing.

If someone was that considerate about how businesses run, then walmart wouldn't exist, heck I wouldn't be working at a new job because my printing company would have enough income. It's upto the owner to run his business, not the community. No matter how you look at it, LFS are in it for money. The first time one of them tells me that the price is so high because they captive bred the creature and raised it themselves to not support reef harvesting, will be the day that I buy a fish for more than I would pay on here.

yes and i try too, i gave away a bunch of corals at the last frag meeting i was at and have tried to sell or give away stuff on here.

Lately, i have been trading for store credit. I traded some corals to Aquatouch and ended up using the credit to buy fish food from them for the next month, which was awesome! They just had a lot of stony corals last time I talked to them and a lot of big corals hanging around so they didnt have any business interest in mine.

I don't think so. A business pays money to sponsor a club because that's advertising dollars. If that money instead goes to support competition it is a waste of money which could be put to better use. For a large business, they may still sponsor the club knowing that the selling that goes on there won't make a dent in their business, but for smaller LFS there's a fine balance sometimes between being Reef Culture or the next About the Reef.

I'm on a negative nancy roll today haha. Maybe someone at home shouldn't have argued with me about starting another tank at my house.. That's great though, I'm glad some of us have those opportunities. Just not all of us. :) Hobbies are for all. P.S. I love AquaTouch, just not always the prices. Amazing shop though.

I guess we are all entitled to our own opinions and ethics. I understand how businesses work as well and just thought i would give them some of my business.

Someone got up on the wrong side of the reef today!

Have you tried a FS thread? Don't remeber seeing one that you started, pictures of the corals you are trying to sell, or prices. Most stuff listed on this board will sell almost immediately if priced at what you are going to get in store credit.

hahaha, so back to the point.
Any one know stores who have a low stock of corals? preferably reefer friendly stores that offer store credit.
