What stores need stoney corals?

WildOceansAZ-
I guess we are all entitled to our own opinions and ethics. I understand how businesses work as well and just thought i would give them some of my business.

I think it's a good idea and like I said, I love store credit!

hahaha, so back to the point.
Any one know stores who have a low stock of corals? preferably reefer friendly stores that offer store credit.

Like I said...Aquarium Arts is a good place to start. They have plenty of room and I have seen traded things for sale there in the past.

well i posted a bunch of equipment for sale a month or so ago and i made a post in one of those "pay it forward" or "free coral" type posts trying to give a bunch away but i still have a bunch of frags that are just getting bigger lol

If u are giving some away I'd sure love to have them

I have to agree with the motivation. Over the years I've done some of all the above. One of my concerns is that as hobbyists it's easy to short sighted view in terms of pricing that slowly drives the local guy out of business. Soo you're left with the equivalent if the big box store and other hobbyists. The reality is that the big boxes slowly suck the vitality out of the towns they invade as the small retailers are forced out. There's little reason to believe a similar model isn't in action before our eyes.

We've had 2 stores close in just a few months. There's only so much reef business to go around and a store that isn't excellent just isn't going to compete with those that are. I know all businesses are tight, but I imagine the reef store business is one of the worst.

It's something you gotta be prepared for, I don't know the last guy that got rich off of a LFS store, but it probably had something to do with Sea World haha. I guess the hobbyist would be best owning these types of stores and another business. Since if you make a loss you can make up for it and stay alive.

I think the opposite is true. The hobbyist is generally a horrible store owner and business person. The stores you see that stay open and carry good stock are ones owned by an excellent business person who happens to like fish.

agreed. Artists are the same way, thats why they need to have agents and managers.

Whether a shop is "excellent" and has high prices, or whether a shop is "slightly sub-optimal" and has low prices.... you dont stay in business if you dont make continuous profits that make it worth your while. Its a niche within a niche market, it seems. Finding that sweet spot between costs and revenues has to be especially tough.

eh the way i see it...my lfs still makes like 20 on me a week on Catalina and top of water and all the crickets and meal worms i buy for my chameleon..

Maybe we wouldn't have the newbie stores fail if they would quit popping up in the same general EV area, come on... market saturation anyone?

This hobby is niche to say the least, if it's taught me anything about market fundamentals it's that everything has a shot ( look at ocean floor, they stay open and they are insanely high priced on everything) and that low prices don't mix with high rent.

An LFS owner should focus on consumables and if someone brags about getting a good deal on a frag why not offer them some frag tools, plugs or epoxy.. coral dip...

Well umm have fun with the thread guys lol ;) . I am probably going to check out aquarium arts in the next few days, thanks for the suggestion! As far as the corals I am trading ... a ton of pocillopora, montipora, some acropora and stylophora, and a monster lobophyton ~13 inches wide. Hopefully I will find them a good home at one of the stores :)
