Ya if the fish are sick and weakly...
I had ick a few months back and hadn't seen it since I just added the new clown tang (only the clown tang got it. Old fish never got it again)

It never made sense to me to manage ick when it can be eliminated with the proper procedures.

Infected fish does not equal "looking good". Why not treat the infection and eradicate it? You are taking a risk with all your fish by allowing Cryptocaryon to remain in your tank.

Remove all fish place in QT. Treat with Cooper. Wait 10weeks before adding fish back to DT

Unless I missed it..no one has mentioned cleaner shrimp or our beloved little friend the cleaner goby (E. oceanops) to assist in helping the fish remove these external parasites from their bodies/gill filaments. In many cases established fish in reef aquariums seem to be quite resistant to a new comers ich infection. Due to how problematic it can be to capture marine fish in a reef aquarium, I'd just let it run its course, but as mentioned new fish should ideally be quarantined. Copper or a copper based medication is good to use but monitoring copper daily to me is a pain when there are other things to do. Metronidazole is another good choice though, and has other uses

Cleaner shrimp cannot remove ich because it borrows itself under the tissue. Cleaner wrasses and gobies will just become infected and die too. Only way to get rid of ich is remove all fish...treat them with copper and allow the tank to go fallow for 8+ weeks. It really sucks to have to tear the tank down and catch the fish but that could have easily been avoided if you quarantined the fish.
So just surface parasites etc huh, something I never bothered to question (which is rare lol). Copper as you mentioned as well as others in this thread, is probably the most effective treatment out there for "ich", but for some individuals, its not the most practical due to monitoring it as live rock and sand can interfere with readings/dosing. Last I remember, copper can and does weaken the immune system of fish and of course has the ability to kill fish, which I remember a co worker years ago successfully achieve. My other concern using just copper is secondary infections that can occur from the parasitic infection, so that should be closely monitored as well. I used to use primarily, quick cure which is a little medley of medications, malachite green and formalin, its inexpensive, works and easily acquired. The medication metronidazole that I recommended, can also be fed to your fish. This topic can go on, but the lesson as so many have pointed out is, quarantine your livestock which will save you some headaches and hopefully keep your fish happy!

it's best to just remove all fish from the tank and place them in quarantine and leave the tank empty for 10 weeks. I'm just saying Fish are expensive it's much better to be safe than sorry in the end. like I said I had over a thousand dollars in fish when I first started and they all died from Ich because I never quarantined... needless to say I learned my lesson.. as he said this can go on and on for days. but I believe all agree that you should quarantine them fish

I know I will get heat for this, but i never QT my fish. I have gotten ich in my tank 3 times. One a blue tang who died shortly after (keep in mind i was a noob who only fed brine back then, the tank was 1 month old with NO live rock). then again on 2 black ocellaris clownfish. I soaked their mysis shrimp in garlic and then fed them, one survived the other didn't. And just recently (literally a month ago). I got a coral beauty who got ich from being bullied. The bullying stop. I fed a little more with garlic. The ich is gone and all the fish are fine. In summary, try soaking their food (be it seaweed or shrimp) in garlic. It works great, even if your shrimp arent sick

But ick is still in your tank. Fish can be healthy and fight it off but add a stress factor to the tank and your cured fish can start showing signs again. Copper or fishless for 6+ weeks is the ONLY 100% eradicatiion of ick. There is no scientific evidence garlic does anything, some studies claim it actually contributes to liver failure.

Garlic can be useful to entice a fish to eat, but that is about it. It won't do anything to prevent or eradicate Ich. A better choice would be to soak foods in Selcon IMO.
