What Tang?

I really like tangs but what tang would you recommend for a 130gal (4.5' foot length) tank. I really like tangs but I also like to keep a good enviroment, i dont want to add a tang that will be unhappy in the tank, so I wanna know if there is if any tang that could be in this tank. I currently have a redtoothed tiggerfish, ocellaris, six line wrasse and 2 LTA anemones.

Tangs need a 6 foot lengh on a tank. That's what everyone has told me. They also say you could get by with a Yellow Tang or Kole Tang in a shorter tank. It all depends on the fish though.

I've also read that tangs need 5-6 foot long tanks but I didnt think all tangs did. I thought maybe I could add a yellow tang or yellowtail purple tang which I would really like as well as a Kole tang as you said.
I dont want a tang that will be miserable in my tank but I want to add a happy swimmer

Sorry I changed it right before I posted but it used to say most in front of tangs. But yes, 90% of tangs need a 6 foot tank (I'm no expert but this is what everyone has told me)

this thread has an "expert's" opinion on MIN tank sizes. This might help.

I did read a part of that thread before. The list stated shows several tangs that will do ok in a 100+ tank, saying that a 125g tank is expected to be at least 2m (5ft). Im looking to introducing the tang to a 130g that is 1.4m x 0.6m x 0.6m (4.5 ft length) so could I try to introduce a yellow tang or a yellowtail purple tang? or is it not even worth the shot?

purple tang

purple tang

I have to say I"m not partial to the purple tang. I got one and it was super aggressive. Of course I might have just got a mean one.

I don't think anyone here can actually mindread fishes. That being said, I have kept tangs in a 110T (4'w) for a year or so and they looked happy.

If you are planning on within the next 1-2 years getting a bigger tank, then I personally would do it. BTW I think 2m=6ft.

convict tang, chevron tang, blue tang, yellow tang, purple tang, tomini tang, lavender tang, sailfin tang, and probably a few others that I missed.

Just pick one or a couple that you like and will get along. The whole 6' rule thing is for when/if they actually reach full size. Most tangs are purchased around 3" and you shouldn't have a problem with size until they reach 6-7" which will usually take years.

If you are looking at grazers I would suggest a chevron and a dwarf angel.
Wrasses are also ALOT of fun to watch searching around your reef

Convict, okay
Chevon - possibly okay
blue tang - will soon outgrow
yellow tang - okay
purple tang - okay
tomini - okay
sailfin - will outgrow

Choose a fish that best fits in with your current tank, not your future ambitions. Based on my experience I would suggest a yellow, purple or kole.

The kole will probably be the best addition algae control wise.

I had a purple tang (about 4") in a 55 gal for 4 years til I upgraded to a 6' tank.He did very well,I even moved 800 miles with him.He is a very hardy fish.:bounce3:

Based on past posts from other people purple tangs can be aggressive in smaller setups. A yellow tang would work well, as would a mimic tang.

In a 4.5' tank, the tomini or kole would be your best bet. I wouldn't (personally) put a yellow tang and especially not a mimic tang in this tank.

LOL ur right 2m = 6ft, miss typed sorry.

As long as the tang goes thanks for all the suggestions! reading all the inputs I think Im in between the purple tang and the kole tang. Ill have to sleep on it and read a little more on this guys. I like the look of the purple tang better but

The algae control keeps the kole in my mind so, I guess Ill have to make a decision.

Does anyone have any experiences to share with this 2 tangs? (kole and purple yang)

Thanks for the posts!

Im starting to lean towards the kole tang. I believe it will be more peaceful and will eat some of the algae. I guess Ill start out with this guy.
