What tank size?

Trying to decide between two tank dimensions... A typical 180 or a 60"x30"x21"

My current stock is:
Golden tail moray
Hippo tang
One spot foxface
Blue throat trigger
2 clowns
Flame angel
Royal gramma

Starting to outgrow the 75. Time for the upgrade. What is more ideal?

Wow that's really funny... I have a 75 and I'm also debating between a deep 5 ft vs a 180 haha.

Bot seem like they could be a challenge to light for my preference of SPS dominant and t5 lighting.

I agree! I just don't know if people value length or width (front to back). Hopefully others can chime in!

I am debating this as well. although im going for the 60" because my ati fixture is 60" so no lighting upgrade needed.

Some people will say length is better swim space for tangs, so a factor to consider, but I think having that depth front to back is so nice for scaping, if I had the space that is what I would go for myself.
I'm actually building a stand for someone w/ those dims right now.

I would say the 180 with your selections of animals.. I have a 180(72x24) and it's a fun tank size.. Both for fish and coral.. Plenty of swimming and growing room in a six or eight foot tank that I hadn't experienced with my previous tanks(110wide included).. And a ton of space fir coral and scaping.. But, the one thing that I have learned, is that it takes a lot of coral growth to make it look mature, and that just takes time.. It's surprisingly a lot of area..

And, with the 180 footprint, you can, if you wished, easily go up, well into the 200's range.. And for me, with my long arms, I can still, fairly easily reach things in the back of and bottom of the tank with bare hands..

If it were my choice, and I hope it is in the future, I never plan on going down below a 180 again.. It's a very fun upgrade tank size..

Some tangs would rather have more depth hiding space than a 6 foot narrow shoot.

If this is going to be a reef tank I would go with the 60"x30"x21" for sure as the 30" depth front to back makes aquascaping look much better and allows more room for corals. For a fish only tank I would lean towards the standard 180.

See I will be doing corals but ultimately more of a fish person so my priority is my fish haha. I just don't know if the turn room is more preferred or not. It's a hard debate. I have 4 foot maxspect 320w and I think with the 5' I wouldn't need to upgrade. Or 6' have to add a light. I have heard tangs need the 6ft. Still not sure. Ultimately this would be my last upgrade for a long long time. So I want it to be a forever tank for my fish.

I totally agree. I personally think 60" width is quite enough for most fish if the front to back depth is over 18". And it is much much easier to create depth when aquascaping. The result can be very impressive.
