What tank to put here...

I am tinkering with the idea of putting a tank in this section of the house, but just don't know...

I am really torn because I don't want it 'sticking' out too far into the walk way area. There are 2 'walls' here. The long one (the one with the cabinet and picture already there), and the short one. The cabinet for reference sticks out around 19 inches.

The dimensions on these walls are:
large wall - 58" long
short wall - 42" long

I really want to put the tank on the long wall. I was thinking of putting a 40 x __ x 24 tank there. For the blank, I feel if I go any more than 22/23 inches deep on the long wall, that the tank and cabinet will begin encroaching on the walk way and will make that area feel/look as if we shoehorned an aquarium in the wrong place.

Another problem is the overflows when on that wall:
1) a coast to coast along the back of the aquarium
Or
2) a right corner overflow that would house 4 bulk heads.

Going with (1) "“ will end up taking a 22" deep tank and realistically making it a 16" deep tank because the overflow will take up 6 inches in the tank. How I arrived at that number is 22-3(inside the edge of glass)-2(for the actual bulkhead)-1(for the glass overflow itself)= 16"¦that's a pretty shallow tank..I think that's pretty awful..ugh.

Going with (2) "“ will end up taking a 22" deep tank and realistically making it a 10" deep in the right corner tank because the over will take up about a 10x16 inch square in the back right corner of the tank. Although that makes the tank better almost all around, that right corner will only be 10" deep there. Is that going to look funny? I have attached a picture of the right corner over flow. The reason it is 16" long is because I need room between each stand pipe to place an elbow for the BA overflow system. Heck, I might need more room, I don't know.

OOORRR..
I could turn the tank all together and place it on the small wall and be able to have a 40x24x24 tank. Either overflow will still take up some room in the tank but might not be as bad. I am just not sure I like it on that short wall. I was planning on having an oversized cabinet by having it on the long one. Putting it on the short wall eliminates that idea.

Any other ideas?

I really think a standard 120 (48" x 24" x 24") would work fine. In general a 12" set back from the door is enough to keep the tank from feeling like it is crammed into a given space so a 24" deep tank would give you 18" from the door which is plenty of room. I would seriously think about a 48" wide x 30" deep x 24" tall 150 for that location (my favorite reef tank dimensions). Given that you do want to maximize the space from the edge of the tank to the door opening, I would lean towards a trapazoid center overflow or your corner overflow over the coast to coast.

thegrun-THANKS for input!...let me take those dimensions and ponder over those..will report back..

In the meantime, anyone else have suggestions?

You might try to build a cardboard mock-up to get a feel for it. The tank with clear glass and water (hopefully) will have a more open feel than the cardboard, but the cardboard mock-up would let you feel what it is like to walk around the tank.

Man, I was thinking the same exact thing driving to the house today!..Might try that.
