What Temp do most people keep SPS Tank

Having a daily swing is good,as long as it isn't excessive, having a constant temp can be a bad thing, invariably something will happen, loss of electricity, heater malfunction, chiller breaks, any of these can spell disaster if the corals are not used to a swing in temps.

OK, so based on this, it seems that the bottom is the most important part of the temp swing here since any problem I might have would result in lower temps, not higher. So if I am currently running temp 77.5-78.5, should I gradually drop the bottom some and if so, by how much? Thanks.

I wouldn't change it, and certainly not lower unless you have livestock that requires a cooler temp. I also would not intentionally let it run hotter than 84, it sounds like that won't be a problem either.

I have kept tanks anywhere from 70 to 85 and having said that the extremes are not where you want to be. Aim for 72 to 82 with 76-80 ideal. Many sps can handle temps 70-84 but need to be acclimated over a few weeks as if a natural seasonal shift. I have seen even more extreme temps(60-record 93, with nothing dying) but it usually didn't fare well long term. They can adjust to temps in the 60s easier than in mid 80s+.

I keep mine 77-78.5. Reason being is I had my whole tank wiped out by vibrio bacteria over night. Atleast 10k worth of rare coral. It is dorment till about 79 and becomes active around 81. So proactively i keep my tank below that just in case that crap makes its way back into my aquarium
