what the best thing to feed sps's

Once again a wrong assumption.
Why would you think that a living organism designed to filter particulate food from the water column suddenly needs nothing else but light to live?

Thanks for calling my opinion wrong seanT, but IMO, as the thread asks, Iwasaki's and lots of vho 03 blue are the best food for sps. :)

Sounds like you're saying zooxanthellae produce the best food for sps. Given their light demands, it's gotta be a major one.

These organisms over the years have evolved to use sunlight as its main foodsource. Sure it will eat food, and probably needs food. But the corals do get food in the tank without ever being fed directly. I used to feed all kindsa stuff and really believed they need to be fed. Now I have realized that they get all the food they need anyways in my tank as it is. Why pollute it more?

Come on Sean...
Let's try an experiment.

I'll put an Acro in an unfed tank under Iwsakis and actinics and you put an Acro in a tank with no light and feed the bejeezus out of it.

Report back in a year and we'll see which one is "better food". :D

I will do an experiment with you.
How about you put an Acro in an unfed tank under Iwsakis and actinics.
And I will put the same species of acro in a tank under Iwsakis and actinics and feed Golden Pearl's, Rotifers and Cyclop-Eeze.

Then let's report back in a year and see which Acro had better growth, coloration.

k? ;)

Well, that wasn't really what I got out of your reply to "Iwasaki and lotsa VHO 03". You said it was wrong to assume that something like this is "the best thing to feed SPS". If you require that the tank be lit in the hypothetical experiment, then perhaps you might want to rethink your reply to that statement. :)

Better yet, my tank is going back up in about 2 weeks. For the sake of seeing what might happen, I will feed the tank nothing but "fish-sized" food items. No GPs, no rotifers and no cyclopeeze. No particulate of any kind. How soon would you like an update?

I can see how my post could be misinterpreted.
Lemme' reexplain.
What I am saying that the optimal conditions for SPS are good lighting AND food...plus flow etc. etc.
Not just lighting.

I think G-man and others [like myself] are suggesting that the food that Acropora needs will likely be generated `in-tank' from products/byproducts of large-size fish food. That adding `SPS-sized food' is not necessary when D.O.M and bacteria/etc will supply all the food the SPS could ever really want. [other than light/zoox-food]

I don't think G-man is saying that the corals never eat, but that they don't need to be `target' fed whether in practice or in foods supplied.

Maybe I'm misconstruing and just proposing my thoughts on G-man's.

Nah, you think alot like G-man. ;)
(or does G-man think alot like you?)
hehe.

Gotcha Sean. Thanks for clarifying.

zooanthalae can't create food from "thin air". They have to have nutrients for this. Light is what fuels that process.

Sure they do, but that doesn't mean I have to target them.
A small box of water has more than enough for them without me having to concern myself with making sure my Acros are all getting fed.
It happens on its own - it's been happening on its own in my tanks for years (on and off, but now completely on). :D

Aside from light the best food for sps is a healthy refugia full of pods...This is plenty of food for sps to thrive, its fresh, its alive and its always there.

I also agree with those who say that sps don't have polyps for nothing...they are definately planktonic feeders.

i like cyclopeeze and dt's... not because i see great results, but only because it's what i feed everything else- i don't think i've been doing sps long enough to really know the difference.

WHERE CAN I GET GOLDEN PEARLS?

I couldn't have said it better. FEED YOUR CORALS PEOPLE! If your worried about excess nutrients, perhaps it's time to upgrade that skilter you're running and maybe even (heaven forbid) a water change?

:)
