What the heck is up with my anemone, pics

1. Food was not fresh/had some additives/bacteria that anemone did not like. Do you rinse silversides before feeding them to the anemone? What brand do you use?

2. Something is attacking your BTA (shrimp?)

3. Something died in the tank just recently.

I would up pH to 8.3 just in case.

Anemone should recover on its' own provided with good water quality.

it shriveled even further in the last half hour. I havent fed silversides since wednesday. I thaw them out first and dump the water. should i rinse them more than that. ocean nutrition brand.

should i do a water change?

dont see anything harming it at all.

nothing has died

could it be trying to reproduce sexually? i wouldn't touch it or move it around. I would do a few small water changes.

I would try brand new ammonia and nitrities tests (Salifert, for example). Maybe your tests are not picking up correct readings.

What else is in the tank?

the maroon clown, pink spotted gobyand pistol shrimp pistol shrimp

fire shrimp, cleaner shrimp, 2 peppermints

couple digis and caps, torch, frogspawn, acan, candy cane, couple zoo varieties

assorted cleanup crew.

Everything else looks completely normal. polpys are out and everything

There we go :)

Shrimp were going after the waste anemone was expelling (most likely peppermints). Anemone used mesenterial filaments (those "white strings" that came out of the mouth) for defense.

Peppermints and BTAs usually do not mix well.

i dont think thats the case. I havent seen the peppermints out at all today. they actually stay on the otherside of the tank in that rock structure.

the RBTA is looking worse.........

well i have to run out and do something. I hope its okwhen i come home.

I put a new bag of carbon in the sump and set the skimmer to skim wetter. I'm making some water for a water change but it wont be ready until tonight (24gpd RO unit takes a longggg time).

I hope everythings ok when i come back

Can Freezer burn be an issue with this sort of thing?

Should you rinse silversides before feeding? Or defrost in Salt water?

well i got back and it is totally shrunken into the rocks with its guts extruded. Just before I left, a snail shell emerged from the guts covered in that white stringy stuff. the clownfish saw it immediately, put it in her mouth and carried it away. So maybe a snail fell into the RBTA and it had to "cough" it up.

Either way, its not looking good.

well i came back from the bars last night around 330 and i found the anemone dead and half sucked into a powerhead. It had been looking better, starting to re-inflate and the guts had been sucked back in. This is terrible.

All the water is really cloudy and I can tell my other corals arent happy. I hope it doesnt kill the rest of my tank.

Started making water for a waterchange around 4 this morning, once I get the dead rbta out and got the powerhead cleaned up. I have a 24gpd RO unit so its going very slow. I dont even have 10g's yet. Hopefully someone in my area has some i can get from them.

wish me luck................

thanks for the kind wishes.

I was able to get 10g's made and some local reef club members gave me some water. All livestock seems ok now, my monti's slimed up a little bit, but not STN or RTN.

The problem is all non living surfaces are coated with a slimey film now, this has substantially changed the surface tension of the water (i think) and now my skimmer just won't foam well. I spent a good hour scrubbing it out of my skimmer but couldnt get it all. I hope I dont have to tear the tank down and soak everything in vinegar to get it off.

I had an 'experience' with peppermint shrimps and a pink tipped sand anemone. The shrimps would come out at night and harass it, picking at its column and the edges of the oral disc. The anemone was clearly unhappy as it would retract its tentacles and form a ball. I eventually caught the shrimps and removed them.

This is not what usually happens when an anemone dies, and even disintegrates in the tank.

Sounds more like a chemical reaction. New salt? Little children in the house feeding fish M&Ms? OLD RO/DI, filters? Maybe your water treatment facility treated the water?....

How is your tank coming along Scarletknight? Getting the water changed ok and everything cleaned up? Keep us posted.

Everything looks good today, water is just a tad more cloudy than usual. I changed 20g's yesterday. Skimmer is working this morning, but the foam head still isnt back to normal. It probably just has a lot to skim out.

The slimey film is gone from the surface of the sump, but I didnt stick my hand in to see. I think I will change another 5g's today or tomorrow, and then another 5g's on thursday or friday. That shouldnt be much of a shock to the system at all.

Livestock looks good. I noticed considerable encrusting growth on some monti's I got, from saturday. I wonder if the anemone attempted to spawn and released sperm/eggs into the water that the sps were able to feed on? very interesting either way.
