nono, im not talking about the coral, i know thats a hammer coral...im trying to find out waht the red stuff at the base of the hammer is????

not sure but it could be the start of GSP's starts with a kind of purplish/grayish base, then the little sprouts then GSP's.

Kind of hard to tell from the picture, so that is just a guess at best.

heh. im not sure if were all looking at the same thing... i want to identifie the red stringy looking things at the base of my hammer coral

Interesting. Almost looks like what has been growing on my chaeto the last 3 months. Wondering if its the same thing? I was never able to get a ID on the picture below.

what specifically????

All that in the circle, they are usually a redish color when starting out because there isn't enough of the polyps to block the light. As they grow out the color fades to what you see in your other thread (the grayish/purplish color stuff)

Since you stated they catch food that tells me its not cyano. You have GSP's in the tank, they tend to send out spores (if you will) and spread all over the tank.

When I get home I'll take some pics of some small starts in my tank. I usually just get rid of the ones I don't want because they will overtake a tank quickly.

That looks more like aptasia or small feather dusters. Not a bad thing in the sump both are filter feeders. Never seen GSP grow in individual stalks like that.
