Does anyone know what this coral might be? I picked it up at the LFS and they were not sure. I usually house soft and LPS and dont know that much about this one...

Looks like a Goniopora or Alveopora.

Count the # of tentacles on each polyp ... that should help define which of the two Genus it is.

Well, after looking up Goniopora or Alveopora, I would lean more toward Alveopora. It has 12 tenticles where Goniopora seems to have 24. I could not find a real good close up of hydnophora to compare. I took another macro of the polyps and that helped me count the tenticles. It has 12 not 10 as I stated before.

If Alveopora:

It's a Poritid, in the same family as Goniopora ... and while reputedly easier to keep than them - IMO I would read up on both, and pay attention what a few folks [http://www.advancedaquarist.com/2005/10/aafeature2 and others]
have done recently to find good rates of success with these corals.

Alveopora isn't the same ... but I'd think you could keep an eye on it, feed as suggested in the articles - and maybe the first guy to write an article on phenomenal success with this coral :)

Yours looks good, IMO - and if you see regular full polyp expansion and healthy tisse - that's good. Watch the edges or `valleys' for problems ... and while I'd love to help more, I just don't know enough.

JENnKerry are one of the `few folks' who I mentioned earlier have good success with Goni's :)

Check their website [little red house] for more info on their success with them.

Everyone's tank is a bit different, and these aren't the same corals - you'll need to adapt, but find a few different ideas of `what works' and figure out what works for your coral.

But I linked one, and JENnKerry are another great reference to learn how to make yours thrive. I know there's more, too!

So I'll shut up, let the people who know talk

I'd like to thank you both for the encouragment and the helpfull info. It seems like alot of people just say "why didnt you research it before you bought it, stupid". Maybe I should have but I really like this thing. I am reading up on it and hope to make it thrive in its new home. Thanks for the great links. JennKerry, Cool web site but when I click on the Alveopora link, the first picture is not working. The lower one is working though.

Yeah I know about that one picture Mike. We fell for the "sure goniopora are easy to keep" as well. You live you learn right? You'll find some good info there.

Yup, and often after acquiring a high-needs coral, most folks wisen up on their own ;)

I'd highly suggest this book, if you don't have it. Has saved itself many times it's cost for me.
