Ok, new to this and do not wnat to screw up my gear. What is the best thing to clean my snorkle and Mask with. Did not have cleaning instructions with them.

I thought about vinegar, (since that is what I use in my tank) but do not want to screw anything up.

All advice appreciated!!

if it is a brand new mask, I would use some paste tooth paste (not the gel) and scrub the inside of the glass with it. Let it dry, and scrub again. Rinse and repeat once or twice. This will help prevent fogging.

Why do you have a snorkel? jk

Dave,

If you've given up snorkeling in favor of Scuba, your missing a lot of cool stuff in the shallows ;) Snorkeling in the shallows is also a good way to kill time in between dives during your surface interval :D

Per PADI, a snorkel is required for a dive... if you ever get in trouble, big trouble, you may be thankful for it.

That being said, I use a collapsable one I keep in my bc.

I actually use one part baby shampoo (the tearless stuff you get from walmart or wherever) and 15 to 20 parts water to clean my mask. helps with fogging issues, and it also makes a great zipper lube. But any soap will do just fine I suspect.

Billsreef, you are absolutely correct about snorkeling during SI. Unfortunately here in So cal, there is not a whole lot of decent no less good snorkeling. I suppose I kind of lipped off (with fun and love as intentions) with a little bit of a cocky attitude... I dive almost exclusively in doubles, always with a long hose, and do as much wreck diving as I can. Most of the people I regularly dive with have the same view as me,we see snorkels as a piece of equipment used on either warm water vacations, or else new divers. I will say that one of the best dives I ever had involved 9 of us dumping our scuba gear back on the liveaboard, grabbing a snorkel and jumping back in the water to play with a whale shark that was acting like a giant puppy. So I agree, snorkels do have a place in the dive locker and can be used for great fun, I however do not carry one (except for pool work with students)

Savas per PADI students are supposed to learn how to do a fin pivot, but they don't need to demonstrate real buoyancy or trim skills. They are taught to use their drysuit as buoyancy device, to do a vertical ascent at "less than" 60 fpm, and to return to a boat with 500 psi (ok Im not sure if that last one is PADI or just the simplest albeit deadly rule of thumb to teach divers). I do have a question for those who were trained by PADI, what is up with the 5 point descent SOSTD? The first S is signal that you are going to go down, Orient,Switch from snorkel to reg, Time of descent, Descend... Why would you give the thumbs down signal to your team/buddy before you do all the rest? You should signal, get a reply then descend...whatever.

Dave,

No worries, I quite agree with you on the idea of carrying a snorkel while doing SCUBA. It just gets in the way, and on the surface with your BC inflated it's pretty darn hard to keep your face down in the position for a snorkel to be usable.

I was PADI certified eons ago. What ever that 5 point descent SOSTD is, I don't have a clue as it wasn't around way back :D

a snorkel can be useful for swims back to to the boat or shore. especialy if you are swimming to a site or from the boat to a rock so you do not waist your air or your bottom time. I grew up in san diego and lived in the carib for 10 years and never had any problems with my snorkel you just get used to it I geuss.
