Trying to get an idea of which anthias' i'll want in my 225. How many and what kind do you keep? If you have a mixed school, what kinds mix well w/o a lot of fighting? Tank size as well .... thanks.

bartlett anthias are very nice in small groups. You could also try a few lyretails. i am looking forward to getting a few in my tank.

Here are some of mine. Hutchi's, Bartletts, Lyretails (collected from various locations), Bimaculatus, Caraberry's, Bicolors, Squarespot and perhaps a few others I can't remember right now. They are my favorite of reef fish!

Tom, how often do you feed them? How many do you have? what are the dims of your tank? Don't they fight?i read that lyretails are territorial.
Great looking fish.

John...I feed 2-3 times per day with a variety of mysis, bloodworm, daphnia and brine. It's a 260 gallon tank 60Lx36Wx28H I'm guessing I have around 45 anthias and roughly 55 fish altogether. The anthias squabble occassionally, but it nothing too bad. I think having as many fish as I do keeps the aggression down somewhat just for the matter of numbers. The main "jousting" comes from the males against other males or the new kid on the block so to speak. I wouldn't really recommend anyone load up as I have, but I do feel that with anthias numbers help keep the aggression down as well as having a larger tank.

 WOW! thats a lot of fish!

I am not trying to take over the thread but I am also thinking of adding a few Anthias to my 240.

Tom, In your opinion, what are the hardiest of Anthias out of all you keep?
I was thinking of going with the Lyretail..1 male and 3-5 females. I have also heard that they fight and the low female on the 'todum pole' often starves and dies..I have heard you could lose a couple this way.
Hope your answers also help the thread starter

;)

I just picked up some last Friday.

I've got a 400 G tank and put in two male Square backs and 4 sunburst antheis. So far the two males seem to be hanging out thgether. No fighting between them. AS for the sunburst. They are still hiding in teh rocks, mainly because I have some BIG fish in there and it will just take some time for them to learn that they are harmless. At least it did so far with my other small fish I put in.

Tank inhabitants include 4 large tangs, I'm talking 8 to 13" size. Large Pink tale trigger, 4" bule tang and wantanabei angle, a coupe of small wrasses, 4 royal grammas, and a couple of small Copper banded buterflies.

All seem to get along fine. The 4 royal grammas hid in my rocks for about a week before they became comfortable and realizesd that the big tangs were not going to bother them. Same with the small tang and angle when I put them in.

Lyretails are some of the hardier sp as well as Hutchi (although not very colorful) and Bartletts. I would personally pick Lyretails collected from the Maldives for the coloration. I think if you went with one male and five females you should be ok. Nothing is for sure with fish you know. Make sure you have some hiding spots in your tank and that you feed at least twice a day.

Here are my lyretails...I haven't had any aggression from them but they did get chased a bit by my coral beauty for the first day or two.

beautiful i think i'm going to have to get a few of those.
i was thinking of a school of about 10 anthias mixed 4 Lyretail, 4 barletts and 2 princess.

I think I am going to get a few more myself. I also wanted bartletts at first but thier colors were pretty bland when compared to the lyretails. I don't think they get as big either. I think I just may add a few more females to the group that I already have...

really? from the pictures I've seen bartlett's look very colorful but I have not seen them in person. does anyone have a picture that shows accurately their colors?

Very old pictures and if anything, a bit washed out.

BTTRFLYGRL,
The weakest fish getting bumped off is something that can be a problem. One way to stop this problem is to get enough anthias to spread out the aggression{in a 180g+ tank: 1 male and 7-9 females would work great}, or just get a few{like one every 50-75g}.

Angel*Fish, beautiful bi-color!
