Unfortunately the dorsal spine count overlaps so that is not 100% either.
Photos are not always the best because color balances and lighting can change the appearance. In general percs have an orange iris while in occs its a little muddy. FWIW, the iris on some onyx percs can get a little muddy, but their onyx pattern makes ID very easy. The dorsal fin height in percs is a little shorter and IME, the orange color in percs tends toward a orange-yellow while occs are more orange-red.
ID becomes more difficult with TR fish because the two species have been interbred.
