my mushroom has been doing well, but i noticed that a few of the heads have had their polyps turn white. the tips are still green on some, but it's just weird.

lfs told me i need iodine. haven't tested for it, haven't supplemented it. could this be it?

proteim skimmers supposedly remove iodine from the tank, so if you have one and never added or checked it, that is possible.

Most people add it and don't check it. I think it is one of the more expensive test kits

One guess from looking at the photo is that they were struggling when you bought them. The others look pretty healthy. My own experience is that if alk/ca and magnesium are in balance, you won't need to dose iodine; I've certainly had LFS workers try to sell me on dosing iodine- they've got tons of additives to sell.

Also- what light intensity do you have? They may be getting a bit blasted on top?

salt creep (solidified salt from splash zone) can do that if it falls on them. It's like a burn. certain chemicals can, if they hit them: dissolve everything in a glass of tank water before adding and watch out for specimens. Fuzzy shrooms also can light-burn.

they're under a 2x150mh. it's a 20" tank, with the lights about 8" above the water surface. should i move 'em further down?

tank temp varies between 78 and 80.

I'd definitely move them down to about mid level

well they're about 15" down, with maybe another 5" to go. the only thing i can do at this point is put 'em on the sandbed.

Almost looks like a different kind of shroom to me, since they were a different color when you got them. They're probably a different color morph that is more sensitive to bright light.

My friend had the same problem and they melted afterwards. They were at the bottom of his tank. I don't think its light.
