What would you do? Tank or Dog??

If he is allergic to the cats and has two good homes to send them to then that is an issue different from getting a dog, although I don't see why it is being involved with it. I too don't like the idea of giving a pet away, but I have had to once when my two bird hated each other. She loves her flight aviary, found a mate, and has raised several batches of babies. However, I would not have done it just so I could get another pet. As a teacher, the message that trading pets sends to your kids is not a good one. If the cats litterally make you sick, then deal with that. Don't tie discarding/ transfering responsibility for one life in with the ability to trade up for another.

I'd stay away from the bulldog...far, far away. Close friends of ours got one a year ago, have had nothing but problems with it since they got it. Had some kind of joint problem; could hardly support it's own weight as a puppy, had Giardia, almost died, got cherry eye twice, and now has to have "nose flap reduction" surgery. You can't make this stuff up. English Bulldogs have notorious health problems and require an experienced, dedicated, and patient handler. And you thought a reef tank was high maintenance...

Dogs are stupid, they smell like dog, and your whole house and everything will soon too, and they crap all over the place, or you have to get up and take them out, and train them, and then they bite somebody and you get a law suit on your hands, and they have to go to a kennel when you leave for vacation.

For what it's worth from a devoted reef tank and cat lover, dogs suck! Get the reef tank!

lol, I'm sure you all don't feel the same way! Some people are indifferent about dogs, most people LOVE dogs....I'm the minority, I HATE dogs personally.

But seriously, your wife is a real drag man! lol j/k Have fun dude!

ltz,
andy

Why do you have cats if you are allergic to them?? Get rid of them, and keep the tank and the dog instead.

And I don't know where you are finding these people who won't hand off a pet to "anyone under any circumstances," they need to get of their high horse/horses and realize that we're living in reality and are sometimes forced to make compromises in the best interest of the animals.

I agree with you. Dogs smell, need constant attention and are expensive to maintain. I have a cat. It's affectionate and independent. It can take care of itself and is cheap to feed and only needs to go to the vet like once a year. I don't necessarily hate dogs but I really don't like them either.

My wife wants a dog and I will get her one but with our work schedules, nobody is every home and the dog will suffer. Cats like it when they're alone and I don't have to worry about them if I go away for a few days.

I'd go with the fish tank personally, mostly because I while I like the look of English bulldogs they really do come complete with a list of health problems due to bad breeding and aren't an active dog for your kids, it's not going to be running around or chasing a ball, it'd probably drop dead, they are a high maintenence breed. Your fish tank can do fine all day while you're gone and doesn't smell or poop.

hahah too many pets!!! We have 900 gallons of tanks
2 ferrets
3.. soon to be four dogs
2 lizards.. and clownfish babies here and there :)

i'm happy as can be. the tank ties me down more than the dogs do. You can board a dog if you go out of town. try entrusting your thousands of dollars of tanks for someone to watch

if i was you, i would trade the wife in for the dog, they are both bitc..lol .think of it like this you tell a dog not to do something one time and it will listen...try that with a women.

Id say keep everything you have and just add the pup.

Our house contains 3 dogs(boxers), 6 chinchillas, 4 rabbits, a guinea pig, and 2 fish tanks.

I dont see why you would even think about getting rid of the others just to acquire a pup.

Your asking "Reef Central" to choose for you whether to keep your tank or get a dog? I think you've already made up your mind intentionally asking for such an ultra bias opinion.

I'm confused, aren't most people who are allergic to cats also slightly allergic to dogs???? So getting a dog isn't going to be that much better. I also agree with the responsible pet owners on here, getting rid of an animal for another is BS. You aren't getting rid of the cats because your allergic you are getting rid of them for a dog, so the allergy is dumb point. I say get the puppy bring it home and let your wife tell you to get rid of it when the cute puppy eyes stare you down. Also English bulldogs are very notorious for having bad health. Rescue a mutt if you can.

I have very bad allergies. Just cause your allergic to a cat does not mean your allergic to dogs. I asked my allergist point blank. He said no thats why we test for both.

If you absolutely had to pick between the two, there's no question in my mind - pick the dog. The dog will grow up with your kids , show you unconditional love, and it will return the affection you give it. Fish and corals are neat to watch, but that's pretty much it. That's why dogs and not fish are "man's best friend". Unless, that is, you've got allergies. :-)
