In trying to help out a fellow sh keeper, I purchased 3 h. Comes for her. The Lfs packed them well, double bagged them, filled the bag with oxygen & placed hitches inside each bag (each bagged separately). I cannot ship today since everything is closed because of the holiday. Also, she will not be able to get the delivery till Weds anyway. What I am wondering is should I acclimate them to my quarantine tank (with new water freshly made) and rebag them tomorrow before shipping overnight. Or do I just leave them in their bags till shipping time tomorrow? I will not be able to put oxygen in the bags again if I open them up. What way will ensure safe arrival (and alive)?

Tough situation you have yourself in. Personally, I would acclimate them to your QT tank and NOT ship them until Thursday for Friday delivery or wait until next week. This will prevent them from being overly stressed.

The h. Comes on the market, which are not CB, have stress/health issues to begin with. To buy them today, put them in your tank, then rebag and re-ship tomorrow would add tons of stress. Leaving them in the bag is also stressful.

May I ask WHY you purchased them today knowing it's a holiday? Personally, if I were the end buyer.... I would have planned this transaction much more carefully.

Since you are the "go between", I think you should let the end buyer make the decision what to do as it will be their financial loss if things don't go well.

These are not available in my hometown. They are 3 hrs away and today was the only day I had there. Initially I was going to take send them fedex (which IS open today, btw) to arrive tomorrow, which I have done before with success, but the buyer can't receive them at work & won't be home till late, so she asked me to send them out for weds arrival.

Btw, they have been at the lfs 2 weeks.

i had a shipment of SH held up in Memphis before for a couple of days, and they were fine. if you shipped them today (5/26) for wed delivery, they should be OK.

I personally think you need to put them in fresh water, aerate heavily with a pump and airstone. Then bag them again. You don't need anything special to add air to the bag. I just twist and blow the air in with my mouth! It's the aeration of the water that is needed.

What they need is for you to put together 2 pumps and airstone ideally. This way you can keep them well aerated tonight in the quarantine tank and you can also have fresh water aerating all night so that the ph will be level, the water will be perfect and the oxygen will be high before they leave.

Also, I hope you have checked the weather, have a good insulated box, some cold packs more than likely will be needed etc. I've shipped a few times. You really ought to take a lot of precautions. I paid 350 dollars for 2 bright yellow seahorses once and one came half dead and died less than 20 minutes after a 45 minute drip acclimation.

Suzi, sorry, your talking a load of rubbish.

We breath in roughly 21% 02 and breath out 16%, use far less 02 (76%) than is in the atmosphere.

As a commercial aquaculturist, all bags sent out are sent with 100% 02, vaced out twice so as to be sure.

The thing is, C02 build up.

Pure 02 reduces this dramatically.

I eft them in the bag how they were, sat them in a cool room until ready to take to FedEx and they made it just fine... thank God! Thank you all for your help!
