Whats going on with my clam

Just recently added a new 10" maxima to the tank but it really has not been fully extending it's mantle and doesn't seem to have PM. Should I do a 20 min FWD to try and help him out? Thanks, Tim

I have several other clams and they are all doing well. This clam is usually open more and the mantle is normally about at the edge of the shell but it is kind of closed up due to me messing with trying to see if there were any pry. snails. Thanks, Tim

How long have you had it? You may just need to give it some time. Older clams need more time to adjust. Shipping and acclimating to new conditions can be very stressful for them. This would be expected from a 10" maxima.

Good luck!

are you sure there arent any fish picking at it? a lot of times fish that have been model citizens will start to pic at something new in there tank.

and i also have to agree with Unarce. at 10" this maxima has been around for a while.IMO it looks like a wild collected teardrop, so for its whole life so far(about 10 years or so)it has grown accustomed to certain conditions. being collected transported and housed in many different conditions over the last month or 2 has put some stress on the clam.

The clam had grown progressively worse over the last 3 weeks that I had it and I read a post that you had made the the sliming is a sure fire sign of a parasite. I did the FWD last night and the clam is looking much better this morning. I will keep you updated, Tim

Oh yeah, 3 weeks of crappy extension isn't good. Glad it's doing better.

I had to put my clam through 4 FWDs to fight PM.

I don't think that it was PM the mantle just wasn't extending and was slimy around it but maybe I am wrong, I just never saw the upward and inward curl. I am glad that I made the right decision, Tim

Well today the clam was looking alot worse and so it is in another FWD. I turned off the phos reactor and am running as much cardon as I can find. I don't think he is going to make it. Is there any tips on making sure that the other clams don't get anything? Thanks, TIm

its hard to say if thats even what is wrong with your clam. it could be many thing from disease to collection/transportation ect..

try the FWD and run lots of carbon and see if it helps
