Whats So Great About Rock!?

Well Cris, I'm up... figured I'd chime in. Fiji rock is more readily available, what most use. Marshall is more expensive, usually, and is lighter in weight. If you can afford it, great, but I don't think there's any real difference when it comes to the job it does...filtration and looking good once it colors up.

icic...well thx much... i didnt really see too much of a difference, but i had to ask... very important stuff to know...

for example...
say I was walking in a pitch black forest and a Ninja jumped outta no-where and asked me," What is the difference between Fiji Live Rock and Marshall Islands rock! "
if i didn't know... im sure i would be in deep deep trouble....
thx to you guys, i dont have to worry about that one now :)

Ive always wonderd what I would do if I were to come upon the keeper of death. Or a forrest-ninja for that matter..... :bum:

i have come upon both.... all u gotta do is tap (a,b,x,y) to use ur special.. ta da!!! brings their health meter down to zero!

Marshall is lighter and has a much different shape (look at it in the stores, you'll see). I prefer Marshall not because it's more porous, but because it's easier to attach coral to, and because the fish really seem to enjoy swimming through the branches/tunnels/caves/rockwork.

Those who think there is no diiference have really missed out. Marshall rock is way more porous than fiji. To give you an idea, a 10lb Marshall rock would be approx the same size as a 18lb Figi rock. That being said, the difference in price is small when you look at it from that standpoint. Also there seems to be much more life and coraline on Marshall rock.

If you have a 75 gallon tank and you put 100 lbs of Fiji at $3.00/lb = $300.

That same amount of Marshall rock would be about 60- 65 lbs. costing $4.50 - $5.50/lb costing $292.50 - $357.50

Both are good if your hand picking out of thousands of pounds.

Fiji rock varies allot, which sucks if your not handpicking it out yourself. It can be very light, branchy and porous or it can
be like large round cement boulders and have one or more sides that have been cut off.

I've yet to see any boulderlike marshal or any that has a side thats been cut off.

Cherry picking is the key. Fiji does come somtimes with nice hole opening like a marshall piece. But the majority are boulder looking types. Ive switch over 75% of my fiji over on to my tank with marshall and I sleep alot better at night knowing that if rock ever tips over it will only scratch my glass. Marshall island rock is ridicoulusy light, but worth every penny.

I beg to differ.. when I was starting this hobby, the fresh fiji rock that I received was amazing as compared to the mud covered, crab infested, pistol shrimp infested marshall island rock..

There were even corals on the fiji rock...

So I guess the answer is "it depends"

here's a thought...if it's mire porous...it should have more total surface which leads to more beneficial bacteria

I hate crabs...I remember the hairy legged ones, and the black ones were the worst, scraping all the flesh off my acropora.. And fast, you have to catch the bastards....

Luckily my huma trigger liked to kill em for fun, and I would stab them with an icepick....

the black crabs are Mangrove crabs... i have one i found in my tank last week... came out when i was feeding my BTA... but it was not a Mangrove.... when i catch em i will post pics to find out what i am dealing with...came in my FIJI rock....

btw: i ran into that Ninja in the parking structure when i got to the office today... let me tell ya, he wasnt in a very good mood when i knew the answer... THX GUYS! :D
