What's That?

Have you ever noticed how difficult it can be, given the varying pronunciations by hobbyists, to recognize spoken reef-related scientific names? Have you wondered how the terms are "supposed" to be pronounced?

I've taken a stab at answering that question here:

www.reeftopics.com

Put your mouse over a term and you'll hear how I think it's pronounced. However, while I have reason to believe the provided pronunciations are correct (or at least close), it's very possible I've gotten some wrong.

So, I need to check people to check my work. If you think there are words that are wrong, let me know. If there are words that should be added to list, let me know that too.

Turned the volume way up...now it works. Very cool. By the way noticed two things...First I say them ALLLL wrong (thats why I went into Pediatrics 5 year olds don't care)
Next dosnt Mark sound a little like Carl Sagan (not bad company btw)

Cool.
There were a few that were different from the way I pronounce them. And I found a spelling error on Turbinaria.

Scolymia was one that was very different from the way I pronounce it.

Julian Sprung has it phonetically pronounced as:
SKO-lee-MY-uh

You have most of them wrong or I have most of them wrong.
Mark, this is a great idea and a huge addition to our reef society learning.
How about adding Chaetomorpha. Did I spell that right?:p and
Caulastrea.

Thanks guys!

Rick, I'd be happy to add pictures if people with much better photography skills than me are inclined to submit them. They can be emailed to me at reefTopics 'at' sites-online.com with a short note indicating they can be be used on the website and, if a photocredit is desired, what it should be.

Randy, thanks! Let me know which other ones you pronounce differently... I'll check some other sources and see if there's any sort of consensus.

The Scolymia pronunciation was taken from Borneman's "Aquarium Corals" p277. Phonetically (skahl'-ee-my'-ah). Citing sources for differences, as you did, is a huge help.

Mark, I forgot to include links to several terms that begin with "c," thanks! Caulastrea is now up there. I'll need to do some research on Chaetomorpha... that's one I always struggle with.

Gary, I saw that guy's post but I haven't been able to confirm the pronunciation anywhere else. I haven't found any sources for phonetically spelled anemone names. You don't know of one by any chance?

I may take a best guess and ask BonsaiNut for his thoughts. Problem is, when he says:

mispronunciation is pretty broadly accepted on some words. For example, the pronunciation of "Gigantea" should NOT be "gee-GANT-ee-ah" but rather "ghee-ghan-TAY-a" (there is no soft "g" in Latin). But no one pronounces it that way.
I'm left in a quandary. I have a list of Latin pronunciation guidelines, but I don't want to pronounce things the way the Latin professors would (but nobody does). I'm looking for the pronunciation you and I would hear if we were able to eavesdrop, for instance, on a conversation between Daphne Fautin and Malcolm Shick.
