Whats the Best anemone food around?

I have been feeding **** tail shrimps to my anemone. But I was wondering just what everyone feeds theirs.

Silversides seem to be best IMO, about one per week.
Mine also PU stray mysis.

how about fish food. I stopped feeding mine almost a year ago and as long as you have clowns hosting, the anemone will be fed by the fish. I am sure people may disagree, but my bta's are thriving-almost outgrowing my tank or at least taking it over.

i agree with lr1001, i had an aneomone thrive with no additional feeding beyond the fact that it was hosting two clowns!!

nems dont need to be fed....they should get all they need from the symbiotic algae growing on them..feeding them will promote splitting and rapid growth..

I feed mine prime reef. Not sure about the splitting, mine took 4 years to split. Definately grew well tho.

I like to feed mine a finely chopped mix of cocktail shrimp, clam, squid, scallop, and tuna. The fish love it too, so I can just squirt some at the anemone when I feed the fish.

I went to an asian seafood market on saturday and got a nice big squid for $2. I cut up some chunks of meat, bagged em up, and froze em. Fresh squid...mmm

So I feed silversides and squid right now. about once or twice a week

I feed squid and krill, no longer do silversides. I fed one of my anemones silvesides and it died about a week later. Right after it ate it it shrunk up, moved under a rock, and rotted away. I was told you need to be careful with silversides because of how they are stored/frozen they could have some chemicals in them.

all your frozen foods should be rinsed in RO...you never know what the food may have come in contact with during processing...also it helps wash away PO4 often found in frozen foods..

i feed my nems krill and mysis, occasionally uncooked cocktail shrimp, and they also get a blast of rotifers and cyclops too once and a while..

Anecdotal, but I had the same experience.

I ran out of prawns one day and I tried some silversides(SF bay). My S. Giganteas ate them, but my roses spit them out. My S. Giganteas slowly wasted away in the next few weeks, refusing all foods.

I know people who have been feeding silversides for years. No problems whatsoever. I think I got a bad batch, as they were not freezer burnt and it was a new unopened package.

i wouldnt say anemones dont need to be fed. i would argue that anemones are fairly active predators, and feeding them is very beneficial. the fact that they then grow large and then split due to feeding is merely a response to healthy conditions and is encouragable. but yes, light is absolutely a major contributor to their nutrition.

i feed my anemones anything i can find at a safeway: scallops, prawns, squid. ill also feed silversides, krill and formula 1 and 2 cubes. variety is important, although i cant say how scientifically accurate that is in regards to anemones....

but seriously, i just go to the asian market and pick up fresh raw shrimp and freeze them then rinsing vigorously until needed.

I feed mine BTA every 3 days. It's used to it by now, if I miss a feeding it starts grasping at flake food or whatever it can find to stick in it's mouth. I alternate between silversides, enriched shrimp and scallops.

The first year and a half I had my nems was b4 this site, had no idea about feeding them, so I didn't.
My clarks did feed it a little brine/mysis, but not much.
I do agree light is main source of energy, and they will survive w/out spot feed, however, after the start of feeding a silver a week both my nems appeared healthier and MUCH brighter color.
I always thaw out/rinse in RO water.

I usually feed a blended mix of silversides and raw shrimp. I use a turkey baster to feed.

Anyone ever soak their food in selcon or any vitamin additives? Would you think it'd be beneficial for them?

And those silverside stories are pretty scary I think I will stay away from that now.

It's hard for me to believe that a nem would die from eating a silverside alone unless there was some sort of packaging/freezing error or coincidence w/ another issue, I mean, that's what nems eat, fish.(not saying it totally can't happen, I just doubt it)
Cocktail shrimp(raw) are ok, but don't compare in nutritional value to silvers.
I've had both my sebae and LTA over 5 1/2 years now, and the last 4 they have been fed silvers w/ no ill effects.
This is my sebae from start, 3-4"

This is the same nem now, 22-24"( that maroon is over 4")

man thats massive. How does squid compare to silver sides?
