to re-locate a tank? I have a HUGE tank...30 gallons, lol. I have a new stand and want to move it over to it. Do I just take all the water out, put it in a small clean garbage can, take the rocks and corals, put them in buckets, and just move it over. Then, put the water back in ect...will this cause any spikes or anything. I just dont know the best way to do this.

Thanks so much,

Josh

I did this last fall with my 29g, from the second floor to the first. I put the water in large rubbermaid-like storage containers, the LR in the water to keep them immersed, the fish in another container with tank water, and took the remaining water level down to the substrate. Then I put a rinsed piece of plastic over the substrate to reduce movement, placed the tank on a board to keep the bottom of the tank flat, and had a friend take the other end to help me move it.

When I put the water back in, I removed the plastic and slowly poured the water onto a plate that I set on the substrate so as to reduce movement. Once everthing was back in, I replaced my filter media and did a 20% water change to reduce any spikes. In the morning I checked levels, with more RO/DI to spare, if another water change was needed. Didn't lose or break a thing, but I did not have corals to contend with!

I would not try to re-use the sand bed, if you have one. Use new sand and seed it with a cup or two of your old sand. Once you have removed the corals, LR, fish and water, you'll be amazed at the amount of detritus and stinky crud in the sand.

It wont cause a cycle will it? Can I go buy some more sand at petco or something, put it in with some old sand and good to go? It wont hurt anything?

As long as you have good, active live rock, you should be able to place a new sand bed seeded two a cup or two of old sand. If you try to re-use the old sand bed, you'll wind up with parameters off the charts.
