What's up with this toadstool dude?

Bent

I got nothin'
My LFS had a huge toadstool that's been sitting in the frag rank for as long as I can remember.

So I took it home last week and of course, it's not as happy as it was there. It's shrunk to about 1/4 of the size it was and it isn't extending, at all.

What gives mang? I thought these guys were supposed to be easy?

did it open up before shrinking down? toadstools shrivel up and shed from time to time. i've got one with green polyps in my tank and sometimes i just walk over and it looks like that, then it opens back up a couple days later.

Yes at one point it was extending. Maybe it is shedding. It's been this way for a few days now though....

they will this over and over and over. nothing to worry about. mine will do this sometimes for hours and sometimes for days. most leathers will do this but toads are the worse.

Mine does the same too off and on. Just keep an eye on its general structure to make sure there aren't any signs of disease. Mine have gone a couple of days in this state before opening up again.

That's pretty normal. Leathers are very sensitive to handling an can remain shriveled for days. As long as your params are stable and you don't mess with it it should inflate. And, yes, it may shed from being disturbed.

The way I understand it is that the shedding process is the corals way of cleansing itself of algae, detritus etc. If it's receiving plenty of light and it's getting enough flow it shouldn't do this that often IME. Having a stable base also helps. Once the bond is secure these corals were designed to withstand those stronger currents. GL.

shedding. mine looked like this for over 3 weeks. looked horrible and I thought it was going to die. then within 3 days it was back to normal size and polyp extension. give it time and don't touch it. touching it and moving it will just **** it off more. anything can cause the shedding trigger.

Ok sounds good guys and gals.

The base is on some live rock and sitting in the sand. It's between the two lights, so the par level is less than directly under them. Not sure the exact number, I ne d to rent the par meter.

It was sitting under 170 par at the fish store under radions. At least that's the par level the dude said.

That spot is also the highest flow in the tank.

FYI toadstool looks fantastic again. So if anyone reads this, listen to the guys and don't sweat it!

Pics as requested. He looks 100x better. I scooted him back a tad, he got so big he was in the way of the mag float.

All in all about 7 days he looked like death. So if someone finds this thread by searching, don't dispair. Let him do his thang man.

Edit:
Btw, I'm super pleased with the color of this guy. He's purple, I've never seen a purple toadstool like that.

Could a Mod change the title of this thread so it's more searchable?
