What's with the "frags for profit" recently?

I have some really rare aptasia--how much can I get for it? How abput $200/polyp? Its really cool & might even eat small fish!

Maybe we should have some sort of CMAS rule on that, eh? But the better solution: don't buy!

Can't legislate capitalism. :)

I paid $50 for my original frag (note I say frag) of my former pink mille from Mike Kirda. I grew that thing out for 3+ years.

Can someone give me to formula fo accounting for the cost of halides, calcium reactors, Co2, kalk, bug hunting and not to mention time, love and tenderness?

Would I pay $175 for a chalice. Not a chance. Would I have paid $100...hmmm...maybe. Other people would still throw up if the price was over $60.

Vote with your wallet.

I'm glad to see this thread. Last time I went to a swap meet I priced my frags really low. Soft stuff was $5.00 for a nice sized frag. Frog spawn which I sold out extremely quickly I sold for $5.00 for each head the frag had.

When I see peoplle selling zoo's of any variety for $10.00 (some as high as $30.00) a polyp it drives me nuts. Rarity, they claim, is the reason why to charge so much. If you sell a 4 or 5 polyp frag to 2 or 3 people once a month it won't be so rare in a year and everyone that wants it will be able to get it once it's plentiful.

I always thought the idea of fragging was to help others out and to take the pressure off the reefs from collection.

When the wife and I do our basement remodel and I get my fishroom/lab I'm going to have a lot of space for grow-out and I'll be starting a major fragging program and I intend to keep the prices low.

I also saw something in the Aquatic Ecosystems catalog about breeding shrimp and I intend to try breeding peppermint and cleaner shrimp to sell for $5.00 each both wholesale and to hobbyists directly.

All for one and one for all.

I just want to say that I am so greatful to have met the great people on reef central who have given me frags and sand seeding packs. When I first started the hobby, I was very turned off by a person who sold me his "friend's" live rock, who shall remain nameless, although you know who you are. I was sure that getting into this hobby I would meet so many more people like him who were greedy and anal about money down to the cent. I decided early on that I would not attend meetings because I didn't want to be around these type of people. Then I met a couple of awesome!!!people who helped me so much with not only their knowledge, but they also shared with me the joys of keeping a reef in that they helped me start my own! This hobby is so expensive, and when my reef is at the point of fragging, I hope to help beginners the same way I was helped. Besides, like jjjimmy said, others here help out when a reef crashes.

If you wanna sell corals for inflated, ridicilous prices, go right ahead. It doesn't bother me because I won't be buying them. :) And hopefully no one else will either, but we know that won't happen unfortuantely.

I've given quite a bit away and have sold stuff as well. The way I see it is, it's been in my tank being happy and healthy, and you can buy it much cheaper than you will at any LFS or on-line place and you don't have to deal with shipping.

I don't even come close to 'making' money, just recouping a little here and there and it all pretty much goes back to the tank in the way of coral, salt, fish, etc.

Everyone is entitled to defray their costs and charge what they feel they need to. This is America, dammmit If they get a little greedy it is up to the consumer to go else where. The way to stop overpriced frags is to stop buying them. Personally, I've had nothing but good luck here. Thanks, to everyone I've dealt with. If it's too expensive, I don't buy it. Just my 2 cents.

maybe at the next frag swap everyone should just put something cool in a bucket and everone should have a blindfold on and pick something! haha thatd be fun...

bigbadbasile- I like that idea about the bucket. If we do that, I'm going to donate my carpet anemone to the "bucket" :D. That'd make for some great entertainment!

I'm glad you gave us another chance! I also had a really bad experience w/the 1st guy I met thru here. He wanted a ummm... "favor" for his helping me out. He also ripped me off for $100 worth of grooming I did for him & a fish I "traded" him (never got what he promised). Everyone else has been above & beyond nice & generous to me, w/ frags, time & knowledge!

Jeni, how did your husband feel about that expected "favor?" Does the guy still have both of his ears and all of his teeth?

aiko670- You can have the carpet if you go bobbing for it in the bucket :D. Kinda like steve-o (from Jackass) when he went bobbing for jellyfish :).

PS. I want to be part of a brotherhood! Or in my case, Sisterhood!!!

Gluestick......You already are.......:) :D :) :D

Adam, Hubby was going to go w/me to PU the stuff owed to me for the grooming & fish I gave him but then the fellow stopped taking my calls. When I *67 before calling, he said he paid me w/the "free" sand & water I got from him. Any time anyone posted here about going over to see this guy I would set them straight or send them a PM about him. That really ****ed the fellow off & he publicy reamed me enough to get kicked off here. Guess he won't be doing that to any more unsuspecting woman he meets on this forum, at least...

Wow, what a story! Glad he's gone, hopefully he's not under a new handle. What a jerk!
PS, I'm glad I gave it another chance, too. Unfortunatley, Schaumberg is too far for me to attend meetings.
