Whats wrong with my Squamosa?

I have had this guy for a few weeks ago (hes about 3.5") and he seemed to be doing alright till I noticed two little spots like the ones seen here. Is this the mantle receding or did something take a nip at it? Any ideas? It is under 440W of VHO on the sand bed. I feed the tank once or twice a day with live phyto. I just tested the water parameters and they are the same as always:
ph - 8.2
temp 79-81
calc - 420-430
alk - 10.2dKH (3.66meq/L)
No nitrates or ammonia.

i thought that too and on top of it my acitics were in the front of the tank and my daylights in the back. hes in the front and its the front side that looks like this, so I was thinking that maybe hes not getting enough light on that one side. so i switched the bulbs tonight hoping that would help. unless I should just move him up in the tank...

what are you talking about? That is perfectly normal and in fact most people prefer to have squammies with blue dots. Your clam is fine as long as it's opening up...blue dot squammies are all the rage.

i was more concerned about the black areas that appear to be receeding. I will try and get another pic up or put an arrow to what I am talking about on the pic up there. Unfortunatly I havent mastered this whole macro photography when shooting into 440W of light....
