I thought I'd start this thread to gain an idea on which brands of salt are more ideally used throughout this hobby.
Currently i've been using just any available salt mix but now that I'm building or just finished cycling my new 130G (baby) :) I'm wondering if there is a best or more accept brand of salt I should buy for optimum quality.

What are your thoughts and experiences on this ?
all welcome.

Cheers

Steve

Well that would depend on what you are going to keep in the tank?

IO is fine for fish only tanks
if you are going with corals Reef kristals is good and TM pro

I use reef crystals. its pretty inexpensive (drsfostersmith.com) and has good levels of Ca, Mg and a good kH

ahhhh i will disagree with the reef crystals i used that and my corals went downhill.... since i switched over to red sea coral salt pro my corals been going nuts! and i get alot more purple coraline....

only downside to the redsea is u have to have a ro/di...

i agree on the red sea coral pro! I think there was a study and it was the best. i'll look around to see if i can find the article.

gettanked salt

gettanked salt

gettanked.com sells a "2 part organic" salt mix. It is the best salt I have used. Water parameters stay stable longer, it mixes quickly and cleanly, coroal growth is better. Alk and calcium are high. It is rated more accurately==it mixes up to 1.026 in the volume it says it will. Lots of other salts are rated (160 gal bucket, 50 gal box, etc) for anywhere from 1.021 to 1.023.

I have always used IO, but recently I switched to Coral Pro, haven't seen any replies with that type of salt yet, is it good salt to use?

Good question... you will soon find out that there are as many opinions as people in the hobby. I personally would recommend Instant Ocean mainly due to the cost vers many of the others and overall consistency over the years. I have used IO and Coralife mostly over 18 years I have had saltwater tanks but have tried many of the others including Oceanic, Red Sea, Seachem. The only one I used I did not like was oceanic and that is because it didn't seem to mix well for me personally. Other I know love it. With the exception of a few cases, most of the main brands should work fine. The chances will be that reefers will be using additives. I think more importantly is getting a decent salinity measuring device.
