What's your take on Sphere Bio-Filter Media

I am new to Saltwater and am just finishing up my first cycle.

I have a 75g. With 26g sump. RS-200 (300mic socks, skimmer) I have gotten so much different advice!

Some people swear by these things.
Some say they are vastly unneeded.

What's your take and/or how would I know I want them.

Is that bio-balls? If so, I would skip em. I'd recommend matrixed media instead. More porus, more bacteria, less nitrate producing crap on the outside....

I have the ceramic balls and the large block, along with 50L of Sera Siporax in 25mm size. The ceramic media is good for more surface area for beneficial bacteria to grow if you don't have a lot of rock in the tank. It serves a beneficial purpose IMO

Ceramic medias are good for small areas. They add large amounts of surface area in a small footprint. Plastic bio balls are good for packing peanuts to deliver good gear like lights and powerheads. Live rock even in a sump adds interest and beauty to the tank as well as large amounts of surface area in a compact space. Hard to improve on mother nature.

I agree that you can't beat live rock and I have a moderate amount in my tank. But unfortunately with my current sump there is no refug area. So I am looking for ideas between socks and skimmer.
