DI untis are sold individually but IME they really need to recieve RO water otherwise the DI will be used up very very quickly. It is cheaper to get an RO unit infront of it then it is to swap out the DI.

If your actually collecting water from the ocean tis can be very dangerous. Most polluatants build up along the shore lines. This is also a popular place for bacteria's etc. I would suggest a huge UV as well as other filters. If your able to collect off shore, about a mile out, then I would still use a UV. JMO
Many aquaculture facilities do collect there own seawater however all is filtered before entering systems. For the average hobbysits an RODI unit and store bought bucket salt is far cheaper then setting up a way to filter ocean water. if your using a few hundred gallons a week then ya, buy a boat and a truck, some UV's, etc and collect your own.
There is a misconception with mst people regarding NSW. Water that comes from places like Scripts is heavly filtered, otherwise it would contaminate the research findings. There are several places around that have such water free to the hobbyist, Scripts is just more popular in Southern California because company's pick up water there and then deliver to LFS's. Since the LFS pays for the delievery they charge you for the water. When I checked into it a 100g delivery from Scripts ws $.32 a gallon. There are other places in Southern California, including Corona del Mar and Santa Barbra that also give free filtered NSW to hobbyists. Max of 500g at a time.

the water from Wrightsville Beach is fine. the filters there are rediculous. they use the water themselves for the same purposes we use it. it is UV sterylized. they have a lot of protein skimmers taller than any man... you guys should see this stuff!
i use it also but it's actually not worth the gas money unless you take large quantities. i just get four 5 gallon buckets worth whenever i go to the beach every few days.

My bad, I took Wrightsville Beach to be the name of a local beach and not a marine biology facility, kind of a regional thing. 
I have been getting water from the LFS. But at $2 for mixed and .50 for fresh, it is worth it to just buy a RO/DI. It is in the mail. It cost me $20 to do a water change. That was only 10 gallons. I can get a bucket of salt for $30 that will make about 100 gallons probably to 1.025.
We have three natural sea water sources.
One is free, just go down and turn on the pipe which is from a salt water plant.
2nd one you have to pay a yearly fee but it's from our Waikiki aquarium. It's sterilized sea water. I just so happened to sign up this past weekend and still have the flyer in my wallet. With this you get:
Unlimited admission to the aquarium
2 complimentary audio tour wands (family & family plus) per visit
1 complimentary audio tour wands (individual & senior) per visit
20% discount in the Natural Gift Shop (excluding books)
Discounts on selected educational classes and opportunities
Kilo i'a newsletter

I just use my tap water with an " aquarium pharmaceuticals tap water filter" I usually get 85 gallons per cartridge. So far so good ( my fingers are crossed). I would love a RO/DI system but can not swing it right now!

I go to a place called Water to Go. It is a 12 stage fresh water purification
system...including RO/DI, UV, and Ozone. Best part its .49 cents a gallon or $2 for a
$5 gallon container. You can go to watertogo.com and find a location by you. They
are located all over the U.S....This water is awesome.
We also use this water for our drinking water too.
