I'm a newbie, too, (I'm on my second tiny batch) but my advice is try a little light and they'll immediately let you know if it's too much (heading to the bottom of the tank). That may be a stressful way to determine lighting, but it helped me decide how much to use (they do need enough light to sight their food).
I've been using a swivel incandescent lamp rather than a flourescent light since I can easily move it closer or further away, although until I take the black paper off the sides (around day 5) I'm especially cautious (I've mostly stuck with a low wattage flourescent until that point).
